Sophomore right-handed pitcher WENDELL RODRIGUEZ (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) is the NJCU Men’s Athlete of the Week for the first time in his career after nearly helping the Gothic Knight baseball team orchestrate the biggest upset in Division III baseball this season. Rodriguez limited #3 ranked Kean University to only four hits on the road in Union, NJ and allowed just one hit through seven innings, before the Cougars plated one run in the eighth inning to edge the Gothic Knights, 1-0, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on April 14.
 
In a classic pitchers’ duel Rodriguez allowed just one run and four hits with five strikeouts and no walks in a complete-game, 107-pitch effort. It was the second consecutive week that Rodriguez (1-5) pitched brilliantly in a road conference game, only to lose in the final innings. He had a .138 opposing batting average.
 
On the season, Rodriguez has 24 strikeouts and only six walks in 43.0 innings with a 4.40 ERA. In seven appearances and six starts he has thrown three of the team’s five complete games. His win-loss record is misleading as he has allowed only 21 earned runs all year. He has faced two current nationally-ranked teams on the road—Kean and Alvernia University, with tough assignments against William Paterson University, Rutgers-Newark, St. Joseph’s College (Maine) and Penn State-Altoona.
