EDISON BILBAO MATCHES FASTEST GOAL TO START A GAME IN NJCU HISTORY

JERSEY CITY, NJ…Junior midfielder EDISON BILBAO (Carteret, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) ignited New Jersey City University's offensive attack with a record-tying goal just 23 seconds into the game, and twin brother JONATHAN BILBAO (Carteret, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) notched one goal and three assists as the Gothic Knights crushed John Jay College, 9-0, in the 2007 home opener for NJCU at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field. In all, nine different players scored for NJCU.

NJCU won its second straight (2-1-0) and is now 39-6-1 at home in the last five seasons. John Jay (1-2-0) drops its second in a row. NJCU leads the all-time series, 11-0, and has outscored the Bloodhounds 54-1 in those meetings.

When EDISON BILBAO gave NJCU a 1-0 lead 23 seconds into the opening half on an assist from sophomore forward SEBASTIAN JOULAIN (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), it matched former All-American Chris Rosenthal's school record for the fastest goal to start a game in recorded school history. Rosenthal achieved that time on October 13, 2004 against Mount Saint Mary College.

Edison Bilbao, with six points on the year, scored the eventual game-winner when Joulain sent a cross from the left endline that was one-timed off the right post.

NJCU led 4-0 at the half before its bench scored most of the five goals in the second period. Overall, NJCU outshot John Jay, 28-12, including a 20-5 margin on goal.

JONATHAN BILBAO finished with a game-high five points, scoring the fifth goal of the game on a free kick from 40 yards out, and assisted on the second, third, and sixth goals. He now has seven points overall and moved into ninth place in school history with 14 career assists—two behind his brother.

Joulain, who made it 2-0 just 1:07 into the contest, scored his first career goal and finished with three points. Senior forward MARCELO CARPIO (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) notched his fourth goal of the year, for a team-high eight points and a 4-0 lead.

Junior defender LEROY SEQUEIRA (Newark, NJ/St. Benedict's Prep) scored his first goal as a Knight at 11:25 for a 3-0 cushion. Freshman forward CHRISTIAN MARIN (West Paterson, NJ/Passaic Valley) tallied his second goal of the year, while junior midfielder GONZALO DAPIA (Kearny, NJ/Kearny), sophomore defender JOHN BERNAL (Paterson, NJ/Inem (Medellin, Colombia), and freshman forward BRIAN RODRIGUEZ (Wallington, NJ/Wallington) all netted their first goals of the season.

Sophomore defender SHAWN McCORMICK (North Brunswick, NJ/North Brunswick) contributed his second assist of the season, while junior midfielder MIGUEL FONTAN (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) and sophomore defender MEHMET GUVENER (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) each added single assists.

Freshman keeper ANDRE VIOLA (Clifton, NJ/St. Joseph's Regional (Montvale)) stopped five shots—including a first-half penalty kick and the ensuing rebound—to register his first career shutout. He made three saves in the second period to preserve the shutout. In defeat, freshman Kemar Brown (Kingston, Jamaica/Martin Van Buren) made 10 saves for JJC, which also had one team stop.

NJCU will return to action on Saturday, September 8 at 12 p.m. when it hosts the College of Staten Island in the opening round of the 4th annual NJCU Liberty Cup; Drew University and #6 ranked North Carolina Wesleyan College play in the second game of that doubleheader at the McNulty Field. NJCU has won all three previous Liberty Cup titles.
