AUSTIN BRYANT (Virginia Beach, VA/Kempsville) landed more kills individually (13) than Brooklyn College did as a team (11), as
New Jersey City University cruised to a 3-0 (30-16, 30-14, 30-15) win over the Bridges in a non-divisional men's volleyball match on Tuesday night on 'Charlie Brown Court' at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU improves to 16-0 all-time against Brooklyn, and 2-1 on the year. The Knights hit .466 collectively as a team with 43 kills and only nine errors on 73 attempts and had 14 service aces. Brooklyn, playing its first match of the year, is 0-1. NJCU limited the Bridges to a negative attack rate (11-19-52, -.154).
The .466 percentage marked the first time NJCU has hit .400 or higher as a team in a span of 48 matches. The last time the Knights had a percentage that high was on February 20, 2007, when they posted a .500 rate against Polytechnic University.
Sophomore setter
JORGE RODRIGUEZ (Havana, Cuba/Memorial) got the start and responded with a .536 setting percentage, delivering 36 assists.
Bryant was one of four players for NJCU to record at least seven kills. He hit .500 overall with 13 winners (13-2-22) and two aces.
Rodgers, who increased his career kills total to 1,008, had a line of 7-0-9 in just two games while freshman outside hitter
KENNY LISK (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) pounded out a .533 percentage behind eight kills and no errors on 15 attempts, while adding two solo blocks.
Also for NJCU, sophomore
JUSTIN BEAUMONT (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne), typically NJCU's starting setter, played two games as a hitter and landed eight kills (8-5-14, .214) while serving four aces, including three straight during the third set.
Brooklyn received eight digs and seven assists from senior setter David Mayerson (North Woodmere, NY/Lawrence) and six digs with four kills from sophomore outside hitter David Choy (Brooklyn, NY/Telecommunications).
NJCU hit .448 overall in the opening set with 15 kills (15-2-29) as Rodgers hit .857 with six kills (6-0-7) and Lisk landed five winners (5-0-9, .556) as the Knights jumped out to a 10-4 lead. In the second set, the Knights were even better, hitting .579 (13-2-19), led by Bryant, who was 4-for-4 on attack. In the third set, NJCU vaulted out to a 7-1 advantage and had 15 kills overall. Bryant had six kills in the game and Beaumont chipped in five.
NJCU will be home again on Friday, January 30 at 7 p.m. when it hosts City College of New York. Brooklyn travels to SUNY Purchase on February 2.
