KEVIN RODGERS (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) tallied 10 kills and a .562 attack percentage as
New Jersey City University won its second match in as many days, sweeping the City College of New York, 3-0 (30-16, 30-19, 30-25) in a non-divisional men's volleyball match on Friday night on 'Charlie Brown Court' at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center.
NJCU (3-1) defeats the Beavers for the ninth consecutive meeting—seven times by a 3-0 score—and lead the all-time series, 19-5. CCNY (0-4) loses its sixth straight match since last season.
NJCU had nearly twice the number of kills that CCNY collected—42-24—and hit .297 as a team (42-15-91), while adding 10 service aces.
Pena hit .391 with a line of 13-4-23. Rodgers hit above .550 for the second straight match, finishing with a line of 10 kills and only one error on 16 attempts, giving him 1,018 career kills. He added eight digs and three aces.

SCOTT MODZELEWSKI (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) had three blocks in his lone set of action.
For CCNY, freshman middle blocker Olumide Akindutire (Staten Island, NY/Port Richmond) had five kills and two solo blocks while senior middle blocker Lylekar Leslie (Jamaica, NY/Stuyvesant) added five kills. Senior setter Ramy Abdalla (New York, NY/The Beacon School) gave out 15 assists and had eight digs. Senior libero Carlos Matute (Ecuador/Grover Cleveland) defended eight digs. CCNY was limited to a .053 hitting rate as a team (24-20-76).
“Last year we went five games with both Lehman and CCNY and this season we're winning in three and able to play all of our reserves,” noted second-year head coach
CARLO EDRA. “That just shows how far we've come in a year.”
NJCU opened the night in convincing fashion, landing 17 kills for a .419 percentage (17-4-41) in the first set. Pena hit .455 in the game with eight of his kills.
CCNY drew within two midway through the second set, 16-14, before NJCU closed the frame on a 14-5 streak, as Rodgers provided four kills. The Gothic Knights started five reserves in the final set, winning 30-25. NJCU trailed for only one point in the entire match—1-0 in set one.
NJCU will be home again for the fifth consecutive match to open the season on Sunday, February 1 at 11 a.m. against Medgar Evers College. CCNY next plays that day in a tri-match at Bard College, facing Bard and Yeshiva University.
