BOX SCORE
READING, PA (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Alvernia University scored three times in the second inning and held New Jersey City University off the scoreboard in the final seven innings as the Crusaders posted an 8-1 non-conference baseball win over NJCU on Thursday afternoon at Angelica Park. It was the first game played north of Florida this season for both teams.
In a contest that was originally scheduled as a home game for NJCU in Jersey City before being rained out on March 16, the Gothic Knights (2-7) served as the home team on the scoreboard, batting in the bottom portion of each inning. Alvernia won its ninth consecutive game and improved to 9-1 overall.
NJCU had eight hits and stranded 10 runners on base, scoring a lone run in the second inning. In defeat, sophomore first baseman THOMAS LACIK (Edison, NJ/Bishop George Ahr) was 3-for-4. Junior catcher FRANCISCO RAMIREZ (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) batted 2-for-3.
For the Crusaders, junior left fielder Travis Wrambel (Newtown Square, PA) was 3-for-5 with three RBIs, one run and a double and freshman designated hitter Chris Gehris (Sinking Spring, PA) scored three times with a 2-for-4 showing, and one double. Senior shortstop Reid Martin (Ephrata, PA) was 2-for-5 with two runs.
Sophomore right-hander Cody Smith (Hanover, PA) earned the relief decision (1-0). Entering in the fifth inning, he tossed 4.0 innings of no-hit, no-walk baseball, with three strikeouts. He hit two batters—the only NJCU players to reach base against him.
Sophomore right Brock Laubenstine (Schuylkill Haven, PA) started for Alvernia and in 4.0 innings allowed one run and six hits with six strikeouts and one walk. Senior righty Austin Rohrbach (Maxatawny, PA) allowed two hits in his ninth inning outing.
After opening his career with a 5-0 record, sophomore righty WENDELL RODRIGUEZ (Jersey City, NJ/County Prep) lost for the first time. In 6.1 innings he struck out five and walked two while allowing four earned runs and eight hits. He fell to 1-1 with the loss. Junior righty NELSON MALDONADO (Newark, NJ/St. Mary's (Jersey City)) threw the final 2.2 innings, allowing two runs and four hits with one strikeout.
Alvernia took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring on a fielding error before adding a sacrifice fly by junior first baseman Eric Domitrovits (Northampton, PA) and an RBI single from junior catcher Matt O'Neill (West Chester, PA). The Crusaders loaded the bases with one out but Rodriguez was able to limit the damage with a strikeout and fly ball to end the inning. NJCU loaded the bases in the bottom of the first inning but could not generate a run.
Sophomore third baseman BRIAN BUSTILLO (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was hit by a pitch to lead off the bottom of the second inning and moved to second on a single by Lasik. A one-out wild pitch moved Bustillo to third before scoring NJCU's lone run when junior second baseman ROB GONZALEZ (Brick, NJ/Brick Memorial) had an RBI groundout, but Lasik was stranded at third to end the frame. NJCU stranded two more runners in the third inning.
In the fifth inning, Alvernia extended its lead to four runs, 5-1 when Gehris and Wrambel each lifted RBI doubles to left field and an RBI single by Wrambel in the seventh inning made it 6-1. That was enough for Alvernia as Smith quieted the NJCU bats in the fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings. The Crusaders tacked on a pair of ninth-inning insurance runs.
NJCU is inactive until Wednesday, March 23 at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts the College of Staten Island in its new 2011 home opener at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex.
