th meeting between the schools, The College of New Jersey built a 33-17 halftime advantage and cruised to a 67-39 win over
New Jersey City University in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game on 'Green and Gold Day' at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
The Lions improve to 13-6 and 5-3 in the NJAC, while NJCU (3-13, 0-7 NJAC) drops their eighth straight game. The College of New Jersey leads the all-time series 47-3. TCNJ extended its winning streak to three and moved into second place in the NJAC South Division. NJCU falls to 0-9 all-time during the 'Green and Gold Day' event since it debuted in 2003-04.
For the Lions, senior forward
Kelsey Kutch (Hillsborough, NJ/Hillsborough) scored a game-high 15 points and became the 14
th player in TCNJ history to score 1,000 career points.
Kutch also added seven rebounds in 19 reserve minutes.
In defeat, NJCU was led by rookie guard
JADE MEDLEY (Newark, NJ/Hudson Catholic) who finished with 10 points, seven rebounds (all defensive) and two blocks.
Medley hit all five shots she attempted from the free throw line. Junior forward
KERRI CASSARELLO (Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) added seven points (3-5 FG), four rebounds and three steals while playing a career high 40 minutes.
Also for the Gothic Knights, junior guard
GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) finished with eight points, four rebounds and two steals in 38 minutes of play.
TCNJ sophomore forward
Liz West (Monmouth Beach, NJ/Shore Regional) nearly recorded a double-double, finishing with 13 points (6-10 FG), nine rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes of play. Senior guard
Jessica Imhof (Flemington, NJ/Hunterdon Central) also chipped in 10 points (5-8 FG) and three steals, while
Tiffany DeTulio (Colts Neck, NJ/Colts Neck) added eight points, five rebounds and three assists.
In the first half TCNJ led by as much as 16, despite shooting under 40 percent (.382, 13-34) and just .333 from three-point range (3-9). But the Knights made just 5-of-21 in the opening 20 minutes (.238) and finished the evening shooting 12-of-47 for 25.5 percent.
TCNJ led by six midway through the first half before scoring 10 straight points and claimed a 22-6 margin on a three by freshman guard
Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, CT/Trumbull). The 16-point margin stood with TCNJ going to the break ahead 33-17.
The Lions put the game away by scoring the first 12 points of the second half—a 16-0 spurt between the two periods and controlled the tempo for the rest of the night. Its largest lead (33, 67-34) came with 1:11 to play.
Kutch scored her 1,000
th point with 2:50 remaining on a layup off a feed from
West that made it a 63-33 difference.
NJCU committed 21 miscues in the game and TCNJ converted the Gothic Knights giveaways into a 22-7 margin in points off turnovers. TCNJ also out-rebounded the Gothic Knights 49-33. The Lions reserves outscored NJCU's bench, 29-9.
NJCU is back in action on Monday, January 23 at 5:30 p.m. when it hosts Brooklyn College in a non-conference match; the game was originally an away contest before the venue changed yesterday. The Lions will travel to Catholic University on Tuesday, January 24 for a 6 p.m. non-conference tip-off.
