JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University committed its third fewest turnovers of the season, but City University of New Athletic Conference-leading Brooklyn College outscored NJCU, 29-22, in each half, and defeated the Gothic Knights, 58-55, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University committed its third fewest turnovers of the season, but City University of New Athletic Conference-leading Brooklyn College outscored NJCU, 29-22, in each half, and defeated the Gothic Knights, 58-55, in a non-conference women's basketball game on Monday night at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.'
NJCU (3-14, lost nine) only committed four turnovers in the first half, but couldn't match up with the size of Brooklyn, which improved to 13-5. The CUNYAC-leaders, at 6-0, won their fifth in a row and lead the all-time series, 3-2; it was the first meeting since February, 2005.
Brooklyn out-rebounded NJCU, 52-39, including 21-13 on the offensive glass, and had a 17-9 edge in second chance scoring. The Knights shot just 28.6 percent in the loss (16-56) and 10-of-21 from the foul line (.476), losing despite holding Brooklyn to 32.8 percent shooting as well (21-64). Brooklyn finished with 32 points in the paint.
In defeat, junior guard
GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) recorded her first career double-double, leading NJCU with 11 points, a season-high 10 rebounds (seven defensive) and three steals in 39 minutes of play.
Junior forward
MAXINE KAMINSKI (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) netted 10 points and grabbed four rebounds. Freshman guard
LUISA MONTALVO (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) came off the bench to contribute eight points and three steals.
The Bulldogs were led by senior forward
Justine O'Callahan (Floral Park, NY/Floral Park), who finished with a game-high 15 points (7-12 FG), nine rebounds (seven defensive) and four blocks in 27 minutes of play. Junior guard
Charnelle Saint Laurent (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollows Hills West) added 14 points, connecting on 4-of-7 from long range while dishing out four assists. Other than
Saint Laurent, the remainder of the BC team shot 1-of-15 from three-point distance.
Rookie guard
Nicole Francomano (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa) chipped in 11 points, five assists and two steals while junior forward
Tiffany Thompson (Bronx, NY/South Bronx) grabbed a game-high 13 rebounds and blocked two shots.
Brooklyn led the entire game. In the first half, BC led by as many as 11 points, including 29-18 before heading to the break with a 29-22 halftime advantage.
NJCU stayed competitive with Brooklyn early in the second half, cutting the Bulldogs' lead to four at the 18:24 mark. However, the Bulldogs scored 10 of the next 12 points to push the lead back to double figures and led by as many as 18 twice in the final seven minutes.
NJCU next faces Rutgers-Newark in the first of two New Jersey Athletic Conference meetings, on Wednesday, January 25 at 6 p.m. at the Golden Dome in Newark, NJ. Brooklyn travels to John Jay College that night for a 5 p.m. CUNYAC game.
