NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University committed 32 turnovers and Rutgers-Newark converted the Gothic Knights giveaways into a 41-9 margin in points off miscues as the Scarlet Raiders cruised to a 77-39 win in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Wednesday night at the Golden Dome Arena.
The Scarlet Raiders improve to 14-5 and 5-3 in the NJAC, and claimed sole possession of second place in the NJAC North Division. NJCU (3-15, 0-8 NJAC) dropped its 10
th straight game. Newark leads the all-time series 39-21.
Overall, NJCU committed 32 miscues in the game and Rutgers-Newark scored many points in transition, including a decisive 30-0 margin in fast break points and a 46-14 cushion in the paint.
For the Raiders, senior guard
Kendra Johnson (Eastampton, NJ/Lenape) scored a game-high 23 points (8-15 FG), including 6-of-7 from the line and added four steals in 24 minutes. Sophomore
ShaQuanna Marshall (Paterson, NJ/Paterson Catholic) chipped in 14 points (5-10 FG) while senior guard
Lori Nieves (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) tallied 11 points and six assists.
Also for Rutgers-Newark, sophomore forward
Jasmine Daniels (Lodi, NJ/Lodi) grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, while adding six points and three steals. Rookie forward
Arianna Williams (Lumberton, NJ/Rancocas Valley) added a game-high eight steals, eight points, five assists and four rebounds in 27 minutes.
In defeat, junior guard
GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) finished with a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds, shooting 6-of-10 in 36 minutes. Sophomore forward
ALNISA HERNAIZ (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Junior forward
KERRI CASSARELLO (Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) grabbed a game-high eight rebounds while dishing out five assists.
In a contrasting first half, NJCU scored 10 of the first 12 points, leading 10-2 at the 13:19 mark. But from there, Rutgers-Newark finished the half on a commanding 36-9 run to build a 38-19 halftime advantage. A 16-2 spurt made it 18-12 before the Raiders pulled away, shooting 45.7 percent (16-35 FG) in the opening 20 minutes. Newark had a 20-4 advantage in points off 17 NJCU first half turnovers and 16 fast break points.
In the second half, Newark led by as many as 39 and collected 21 points off 15 NJCU giveaways. The Scarlet Knights used a stifling defense to limit NJCU to 26.8 percent shooting in the game (15-56) while making 48.4 percent of its own shots (31-64) and 10-of-12 from the line (.833).
Another difficult conference game awaits NJCU on Saturday, January 28 at 1 p.m. when it faces #21/24 ranked Kean University in Union, NJ.
