GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) scored in double-figures for the third straight game but the Gothic Knights committed 33 turnovers as #21/24 ranked Kean University cruised to a 93-45 win in a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's basketball game on Saturday afternoon at the Harwood Arena.
The Cougars, ranked No. 21 nationally in the USA Today/ESPN Division III Top 25 Coaches' Poll and No. 24 by D3hoops.com, improve to 18-3 and 9-0 in the NJAC, and maintained sole possession of first place in the NJAC South Division. NJCU (3-16, 0-9 NJAC) dropped its 11
th straight game. Kean leads the all-time series 45-9.
In defeat,
Rivera finished with a career high of 18 points (9-17 FG) in 37 minutes and freshman guard
LUISA MONTALVO (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) contributed 12 points (5-13 FG) and three steals for the Gothic Knights. Sophomore forward
ALNISA HERNAIZ (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and junior forward
KERRI CASSARELLO (Keansburg, NJ/Keansburg) each had nine rebounds.
Kean placed five players in double-figures, led by junior guard
Naimah Clemons (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) with a game-high 25 points on 11-of-16 shooting with three assists and three steals and
junior guard Brittanie Payne (Willingboro, NJ/Burlington County Tech) nearly recorded a triple-double, finishing with 10 rebounds, 10 assists, eight points, three blocks and three steals in 28 minutes.

Njera Hunter (Roselle, NJ/Abraham Clark) and senior guard
Brittany Powell (Tinton Falls, NJ/Monmouth Regional) each contributed 13 points and
Powell added five assists and five steals. Junior forward
Kyanne Sager (Westminster, VT) finished with 11 points (4-5 FG) while junior center
Simone Smith (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) chipped in 10 points (4-6 FG), four blocks and four steals.
NJCU jumped out to a quick 8-1 lead but it wouldn't last. After a steal and fast break by
Clemons tied it at 12-12,
Rivera answered with a jumper for NJCU's last lead of the day (14-12).
Clemons hit a three with 11:11 left in the half and that sparked a 19-0 run that saw Kean's lead swell to 19 (33-14) over a span of 5:20, as
Clemons scored 11 of the 19. Kean forced the Gothic Knights into 10 turnovers and made six steals in the five minute run.
The lead increased to 43-17 with 3:40 left as the run grew to 29-5 and the Cougars led by 25 at halftime (47-22) before outscoring the Knights in the second half, 46-23, for a 93-45 decision. Kean's largest lead was 50 at three junctures of the final minutes.
NJCU committed 24 of its turnovers in the first half. Overall, Kean had a 34-16 margin in points off turnovers and had 24 steals. Kean also held advantages of 28-4 on the fast break and 33-4 in bench scoring.
NJCU will face Lehman College in a non-conference game on Monday, January 30 at 7 p.m. The game will be played at Baruch College in New York, NY.
