GOTHIC KNIGHT INSIGHTS: Post-game interviews with PETE SENYSZYN and MICHAEL MARTUCCI
ARCHIVED GAME BROADCAST
JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University scored seven runs in the bottom of the first inning and never looked back, pounding out 16 hits as NJCU won its 12
th game of the year, knocking off Baruch College, 12-4, in non-conference action on Tuesday at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex. The Gothic Knights scored in every inning except the third and sixth.
NJCU (12-18) snapped a four-game losing streak while knocking off the City University of New York's undefeated Bearcats (17-14, 8-0 CUNYAC). The Knights turned three double plays in the game and stole five bases.
Freshman shortstop
MICHAEL MARTUCCI (Bayonne, NJ/Saint Peter's Prep) led five players with multiple hits, finishing 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI while stealing his 13
th and 14
th base of the season. He was instrumental in all three
double plays turned.
Junior center fielder
MICHAEL PATTERSON (Piscataway, NJ/Piscataway) was 3-for-4 with three runs, one RBI, a walk, double and steal in the leadoff spot while junior
PETE SENYSZYN (Carteret, NJ/Carteret), in the designated hitter role, was 2-for-4 with three RBIs and one run.
Also for NJCU, junior left fielder
ANDREW RIVERA (Edison, NJ/Edison) was 2-for-5 with a run and RBI and junior third baseman
BRIAN BUSTILLO (Jersey City, NJ/Hudson Catholic) was 2-for-5 with one run. Junior catcher
ORLANDO BOLANO (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Freshman right fielder
MATTHEW WAGNER (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) scored twice in a 1-for-4, one-RBI day.
Three NJCU pitchers limited Baruch to eight hits. Sophomore righty
RYAN MITCHELL (Colonia, NJ/Colonia) made his 10
th appearance but only his second start of the season and is now 2-0. In 5.2 innings he allowed two earned runs (four total) on seven hits with three strikeouts and one walk over 91 pitches.
Sophomore left-hander
ZACK MARKLE (Hoboken, NJ/Hoboken) retired all four batters he faced in 1.1 innings, fanning one. Junior lefty
PEDRO GARCIA (North Bergen, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) hurled the final 2.0 innings, allowing just one hit with two strikeouts and one walk versus nine batters.
For Baruch, junior catcher
Thommy DeJesus (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic) was 2-for-4 with a two-RBI double and senior first baseman
Thomas Daly (Valley Stream, NY), a two-time CUNYAC Player of the Week, including this Monday, was 2-for-5 with one run. Sophomore left fielder
John Yuksekol (Brooklyn, NY) scored twice.
Freshman righty
Alex Fabian (Jackson Heights, NY) was knocked out of the game after two-thirds of an inning. In defeat (1-4) he was charged with seven runs, but just two earned against seven hits over 25 pitches. Junior righty
Jeffrey Mercedes (Brooklyn, NY) tossed the final 7.1 innings in relief, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits but he struck out seven versus two walks over 117 pitches.
The damage was most certainly done in the bottom of the first as NJCU sent 11 batters to the plate, led by
Patterson who had two hits in the inning. The Knights had four consecutive singles to open the game as
Patterson, Bustillo, Senyszyn and
Martucci all singled and the latter two hits by
Senyszyn and
Martucci drove in the first two runs. NJCU got a break when a groundball to third base was bounced in front of home plate on what would have been a routine play to the plate. But
Senyszyn scored on the error for a 3-0 edge. After
Rivera reached on a fielding error, sophomore second baseman
ROB ROMAN (Hoboken, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) had an infield single for a 4-0 margin.
With the bases loaded,
Bolano singled to right field, driving in
Rivera and
Wagner, who reached on a fielder's choice.
Bolano was thrown out trying to stretch his hit into a double but
Roman moved to third and scored on a double to right center by
Patterson for a 7-0 advantage.
NJCU added five single runs in the second, fourth, fifth, seventh and eighth innings. In the second,
Martucci singled with one out, stole second and scored on an RBI single by
Wagner for an 8-0 lead.
The same game plan worked in the fourth.
Martucci singled, stole second, moved to third on a groundout and scored on a
Rivera RBI single before the Knights left two runners on. In a productive outing, NJCU only stranded three runners all game.
In the fifth
Patterson walked with one out, advanced to third on a hit-and-run single by
Bustillo, and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Senyszyn for a 10-2 cushion. Two innings later,
Patterson had another one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single to right center by
Senyszyn for an 11-4 lead. In the eighth,
Wagner reached on a leadoff error before scoring on a pinch-hit RBI single to right center by sophomore
MATT MATLOSZ (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson).
Baruch scored two runs in the fourth and two in the sixth. In the fourth inning, NJCU coughed up three of the four errors it would commit in the game (Baruch had five errors) and the Bearcats took advantage to break up the shutout bid by
Mitchell.
Daly led off with a single before an infield error put two runners on with no outs.
Yuksekol, who reached on the error, advanced to second when
Mitchell committed a throwing error on a fielder's choice throw to second that likely would have resulted in a double play had a clean throw been made. Instead,
Daly scored from third before
Yuksekol later crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly. Baruch stranded two runners on base.
In the sixth, sophomore third baseman
Yancy Taveras (New York, NY), who committed the earlier throwing error to home plate, had back-to-back singles with
Yuksekol.
Mitchell fanned the next two batters but with two outs
DeJesus was able to lift a 1-2 pitch into the left center gap for a two-run double.
NJCU begins a two-game home-and-home series on Thursday, April 19 at 3:30 p.m. when it hosts The College of New Jersey.
