MEGAN GINTER BECOMES NJCU’S ALL-TIME STEALS LEADER AS NJCU SPLITS AT STATEN ISLAND

- Megan Ginter now owns the top spot in the record books all to herself. She swiped her 90th base in 101 tries to break a 12-year-old school record in the process. It may not be the last record she sets; the First-Team All-NJAC returnee moved into third place with 117 runs and is 19 shy of matching the all-time record of 136.

STATEN ISLAND, NY
(NJCUGothicKnights.com) | New Jersey City University junior first baseman REBECCA SATZ (Morris Plains, NJ/Morristown) was a combined 5-for-9 with multiple hits in both ends of the doubleheader to extend her school-record hitting streak to 22 consecutive games and senior shortstop MEGAN GINTER (Nutley, NJ/Nutley) became the all-time leader in stolen bases in school history as the Gothic Knights split a non-conference twinbill against the College of Staten Island, losing the first game, 8-3 before winning the nightcap in extra innings, 14-6, at the CSI Softball Complex on Thursday evening.

NJCU is 9-13 after the doubleheader split. In game two, CSI (3-9) scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to force extra innings, knotted at 6-6. But NJCU responded by scoring eight runs in the top of the eighth as 10 players batted. The Dolphins lead the all-time 'Bayonne Bridge Series', 22-16.

Ginter was a combined 4-for-8 with three runs on the day. Her game one, first inning steal was the 90th of her career in 101 attempts, eclipsing the 12-year-old school record previously held by standout Kristy Zielinski, who had 89 steals in 109 chances from 1997-2000. Ginter, the conference leader in stolen bases, is now 21-for-21 in steals this season.

Senior left fielder STEPHANIE GOMEZ (South Plainfield, NJ/Belleville) excelled in the doubleheader, batting a combined 6-for-8 with four RBIs.

Staten Island broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning as the Dolphins scored five unanswered runs to take the opening game in the doubleheader. The Knights scored the first three runs of the game in the top of the first before CSI scored the final eight tallies—two in the first and one in the fourth to tie before the five-run sixth.

There were 25 combined hits in the game—14 for CSI and 11 for NJCU. For NJCU, Satz extended her streak to 21 games, going 2-for-4 with a run and RBI. Gomez also added a run, RBI and a triple in a 3-for-3 effort and Ginter was 2-for-4 with her 12th double of the season—now three shy of matching the single season record. Rookie third baseman, NICOLE CALIXTO (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth), the reigning NJAC Rookie Player of the Week was 1-for-3 with an RBI.

CSI was led by rookie center fielder Brittany Smith (Staten Island, NY/St. John Villa), who was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, two runs scored and her first career homerun.—a decisive, three-run, inside-the-parker in the sixth inning.

Senior third baseman Kaitlin Flynn (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville) added two RBIs and two runs scored in a 1-for-3 effort. Junior shortstop Christine DeCarlo (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Sophomore Stephanie Solari (Old Bridge, NJ/St. John Vianney) and rookie Victoria Procopio (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph Hill) each added a run and Solari had two hits. Senior right fielder Kristi Dillon (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea) was 2-for-4.

Ponsiglione picked up the win for Staten Island (2-2). In 7.0 innings, she allowed 11 hits and three runs with five strikeouts and no walks. Junior righty ASHLEY O'BEIRNE (Wood-Ridge, NJ/Immaculate Conception) suffered the loss for the Gothic Knights (4-8). She allowed 14 hits and eight runs (seven earned) in 6.0 innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

NJCU got on the scoreboard right away in the top of the first inning. Ginter singled, stole second for the all-time record and scored on a Satz single to left center. Satz would later score on a Gomez triple and the Knights would take a 3-0 lead when Calixto singled to left center, scoring Gomez.

CSI would respond with two runs in the bottom of the first inning sparked by a Flynn triple to center fielder that scored Smith, who had singled and advanced on an error. Flynn would later score when Ponsiglione sent a sacrifice fly to left field.

NJCU would leave two runners on in each of the first three innings and the Dolphins would tie the game up in the bottom of the fourth when DeCarlo walked and after an error, later scored after a fielder's choice RBI groundout by Flynn.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Staten Island would secure the game one victory as it scored five runs on seven hits. Smith proved to be the difference maker of the game as her inside the park homerun brought in the go-ahead runs after back-to-back infield leadoff singles. The Dolphins would score two more insurance runs as Flynn walked and came home on an RBI single by senior left fielder Catherine Ebro (Staten Island, NY/St. Joseph by the Sea). Rookie Samantha Tallarine (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) had a pinch hit RBI grounder for the eighth run before CSI left the bases loaded. NJCU was unable to mount a comeback.

In game two, NJCU led 5-3 after five innings and 6-3 after six before the Dolphins evened the game in the bottom of the seventh, leading up to the explosive, eight-run outburst by the Knights in the eighth inning.

NJCU had a 13-9 advantage in hits and Gomez led the way with three RBIs, going 3-for-5 with one run. Satz slugged a pair of doubles, her 11th and 12th of the season to keep pace with Ginter for the single-season record and she extended her hitting streak to a school-record 22 from the start of the season by batting 3-for-5 with three runs and one RBI.

Ginter was 2-for-4 with two runs and one RBI and senior JESS MUCERINO (Whippany, NJ/Whippany Park), the starting pitcher in game two, was 2-for-5 with two runs, two RBIs and her third homer of the season and fifth in two years at NJCU.

Also for NJCU, junior GABRIELLE RIVERA (Teaneck, NJ/Saint Joseph of the Palisades) had two RBIs with a pinch-hit single while sophomore catcher MARISSA BARISO (Hewitt, NJ/West Milford) scored three times, including twice in the eighth inning.

Mucerino went the first 6.1 innings on the mound but was credited with a no-decision after allowing six runs and eight hits with three strikeouts and two walks. O'Beirne shook off her game one loss by throwing the final 1.2 innings of relief and was very effective, allowing one hit while facing five batters, to claim the win (5-8).

For CSI, Flynn had three RBIs, going 2-for-4 with a double, triple and run scored. Smith added to her game one showing by scoring twice and driving in one in a 2-for-4 performance. Solari and D'Amato each had two hits. Solari was the losing pitcher (1-5), allowing 10 earned runs (14 total) and 13 hits in 8.0 innings, walking five against one strikeout.

Each team scored twice in their turns at bat in the first inning. Ginter walked and scored when Satz reached on an error. Gomez knocked in Satz with a single up the middle for a 2-0 edge.

CSI scored two runs on a double to left field by Flynn, as Dillon led off with a walk, Smith dropped down a bunt single, and both players came home on the extra base hit. CSI added a go-ahead run in the third as Solari doubled and came home on a sac fly by Ponsiglione.

The Knights got three runs back in the top of the fifth. Satz, who also doubled in the third inning, doubled again with one out and scored on a Calixto single up the middle. CSI committed two errors in the inning and both Calixto and Bariso, who reached on the first error, came home on a misplay in the outfield. NJCU added a sixth run for a 6-3 cushion in the top of the sixth when Mucerino slammed a two-out homerun to left field.

In the bottom of the seventh, D'Amato started the rally with a single and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a one-out infield single by Smith. A triple to left center by Flynn drove in Smith to make it a one-run game before Solari tied it with a single up the middle to bring in Flynn.

In the eighth, NJCU chalked up five hits and capitalized on two Dolphin errors. Bariso started the frame on second base due to the tiebreaker rule and scored the eventual winning run on an error. After a walk, Ginter singled to knock in a run and Mucerino doubled down the left field line for a 9-6 lead. An infield RBI single by Satz added to the lead before Gomez deposited a two-run single to left as the lead ballooned to 12-6. Bariso walked and Rivera chalked up a pinch-hit two-run single to score Gomez and Bariso, who bookended the inning by scoring the first and eighth runs for NJCU in the decisive frame. O'Beirne quickly got two outs when CSI came to bat in the bottom of the eighth before a rundown play ended the game at home plate, retiring the runner placed at second due to tiebreaker rules.

NJCU is back in action on Saturday, April 7 at 1 p.m. when it hosts Rutgers-Newark in a New Jersey Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Thomas M. Gerrity Athletic Complex in Jersey City.
