PATCHOGUE, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | St. Joseph's College scored the only goal of the game in the sixth minute and stopped seven Gothic Knight shots on goal as the Golden Eagles edged
New Jersey City University, 1-0, in a non-conference men's soccer Columbus Day night game on October 13. It was NJCU's fourth 1-0 loss of the season.
NJCU (1-12-3) lost to St. Joseph's (6-11-0) for the first time in 11 years and had its seven-game winning streak snapped in the series. NJCU had a 13-9 margin in shots.
The Gothic Knights were shutout for the ninth time this season and third straight game and are winless in their last 12 outings. It was the 11
th game decided by one goal or less this season and the Knights are 1-7-3 in those outcomes.
In a game in which 10 different Gothic Knights attempted a shot, NJCU's best chance to tie it came in the final 20 seconds. NJCU had two corner kicks in the final minute, including one with 20 seconds to go by junior midfielder
Aboubacar Diawara (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) into the box. A header by freshman
Benedict Adundo (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) glanced off the left post with 16 seconds left as the Eagles escaped.
The Eagles scored their only goal of the game on a miscue at 5:29. NJCU junior converted goalkeeper
Tyler Krychkowski (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington) mishit a goal kick and SJC's
Alex Guadagno got to the short clear before the NJCU defense could cover. In a 1-on-1 breakaway,
Krychkowski got a piece of the shot, but not enough to completely defend it and the ball slid under him as he hit the turf. Meanwhile,
Guadagno, trying to avoid a collision with the keeper, jumped over
Krychkowski and the loose ball took an odd carom off his shin and into the net. It was his second goal of the season—both game-winners.
Krychkowski finished with six saves while his counterpart for SJCLI,
Avery Gomez, made seven stops to register his team's fourth shutout of the season.
