41-14 Kills Differential Enough for Rowan in 3-0 Win Over #NJCUWVB

GLASSBORO, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rowan University hit .326 as a team and had a 41-14 differential in kills as the Profs swept a New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball match from New Jersey City University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-23, 25-10) on October 2 at Esby Gymnasium.
 
Rowan (7-12, 2-2 NJAC) led wire to wire in the first and third sets and overcame 10 ties and six lead changes in the second set to sweep the Gothic Knights (2-12, 0-4 NJAC).   
 
Rowan hit .476 in the first set, putting away 12 kills (12-2-21), and went .458 in the third game when it landed 14 winners (14-3-24). The Profs finished with 15 kills in game two when its attack percentage dropped to .171. Overall, Rowan hit .326 with 41 kills (13 errors) in 86 swings. NJCU finished at .051 (14-11-59).

In defeat, sophomore outside hitter Elyssa Magee (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) finished with team bests of five kills, nine digs and two aces. Senior middle hitter Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) added three kills (31-1-12, .167). Rookie setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) totaled 11 assists.
 
Morgan Mende led Rowan with 10 kills and a .471 attack rate (10-2-17), adding three aces. Danielle Havlicek hit .467 with nine winners (9-2-15) and six digs. Mary-Grace Testa and Rebecca Dantonio finished with 18 and 14 assists, respectively, in a two-setter rotation.
 
Also for the hosts, Erica O'Hagan finished with six kills (6-3-15, .200) and three aces. Kelsey Mazurek hit .500 with five putaways (5-1-8).
 
Rowan opened a 10-3 lead in the first set and was never challenged. In the third set Rowan led 7-4 before uncorking a 9-1 run to claim a 16-5 advantage which swelled to 20-7.
 
The second set was the most competitive as NJCU jumped in front 5-1. Later tied at 9-9, the Profs scored seven of the next 10 to gain a 16-12 cushion before NJCU battled back to force ties at 19-19, 20-20 and 22-22. An ace by Medley gave NJCU a 23-22 advantage before a kill by Mende tied it, O'Hagan made it 24-23 with another winner and a Mende ace sealed the 25-23 decision.

On Saturday, October 4, the Knights head to Allentown, Pa. for a tri-match at Cedar Crest College with Gwynedd Mercy University before heading to Centenary College in Hackettstown, NJ on Tuesday, October 7 (7 p.m.).
