Brittany Hoffman (
McMurray, PA/Peters Township) made eight saves to keep
New Jersey City University's women's soccer team alive for much of the night but Rutgers University-Newark added to a one-goal lead with two goals in less than four minutes in the second half and topped the Gothic Knights, 3-0, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action under the lights on October 4 at Alumni Field.
Rutgers-Newark (7-4-1, 2-2-0 NJAC) scored in the 10
th, 69
th and 72
nd minutes and outshot the Gothic Knights, 20-2. NJCU (3-5-2, 0-4-0 NJAC) lost by a 3-0 score for the second time this week and was shutout for the third straight game and fifth time this season.
Hoffman, a three-time All-NJAC selection, made seven of her eight saves in the second half; the Knights also had one team save. Two-time NJAC Rookie of the Week
Laura Bustamante (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) had both of NJCU's shots, putting each on goal.
The Raiders scored what proved to be the game-winner at the 9:24 mark as
Emily Corson redirected a right side corner kick by
Haley Savva into the middle of the net. Rutgers-Newark had a 6-1 edge in shots in the first half and led 1-0 at the break.
The Raiders played nine substitutions with only one NJCU reserve seeing time and the fresher team had the advantage in the second half. The hosts notched a 14-1 differential in shots and RUN began pulling away in the middle of the period.
Hoffman stopped an initial breakaway opportunity by
Sara Corson, but she gathered her own rebound and chipped her eighth goal of the year over the NJCU keeper at 68:02.
A long ball through the middle by
Sabrina Solorzano led to
Paige Lazar putting away her fourth goal of the season into the right side of the next at 71:48.
RUN junior goalie
Veronika Tueros made two saves to record her first career shutout.
