Pioneers Sweep Gothic Knights in 2014 NJAC Volleyball Opener

JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | William Paterson University hit .244 as a team and collected 40 kills in three sets to sweep New Jersey City University, 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 27-25) in the New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball opener for both programs on September 16 at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center on 'Coach Charlie Brown Court.' The match was also NJCU's 2014 home opener.

The Pioneers won their 12th consecutive match dating to the end of the 2013 season, improving to 8-0 (1-0 NJAC). NJCU is still seeking its first win (0-9, 0-1 NJAC).

WP hit .367 in a decisive first set, pounding out 15 kills (15-4-30) and posted double figures in all three periods. WP added 11 kills in the second game (11-4-26, .269) and 14 in the third set while surviving in extended points after committing 10 attack errors.

NJCU's offensive production primarily came from three players who accounted for 22 of its 27 kills. For the sixth time this season and 30th time in her career, senior middle hitter Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) reached double figures in kills in a match, accomplishing the feat for the ninth time in a three-set contest. She slammed 11 kills and hit .156 (11-6-32).

In the third set, WP gained the lead midway through the game and held two match points at 24-22 before committing back-to-back attack errors. A bad set gave NJCU game point at 25-24. But back-to-back kills by Roach—the second a shot off the block—and a put away down the middle by VanDeRee on its third match point, gave WP a 27-25 decision.
