.304 Attack Lifts Rutgers-Newark Over #NJCUWVB, 3-0

NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Senior middle hitter Jade Medley (Queens, NJ/Hudson Catholic) floored a match-high nine kills but Rutgers University-Newark's overall attack was too much to overcome as the Scarlet Raiders hit .304 and made only six swinging errors as RUN downed NJCU, 3-0 (25-8, 25-13, 25-17) in New Jersey Athletic Conference women's volleyball on September 30 at The Golden Dome.
 
Medley had nine kills and hit .179 (9-4-28) but was the lone constant on offense for NJCU (2-11, 0-3 NJAC). The rest of the club had a line of 13-19-71—a -.086 percentage. The Gothic Knights finished at -.011 for the evening (22-23-89).

Conversely, RUN had 30 kills in 79 attempts while adding 13 service aces and five blocks to control the match in multiple facets.

Senior outside hitter Marissa Scarpa (Kearny, NJ/Kearny) equaled a match-high with 12 digs. Rookie setter Rachel McIntyre (Drexel Hill, PA/Upper Darby) delivered 19 assists and six digs. Sophomore middle hitter Shege Haxhaj (Lyndhurst, NJ/Lyndhurst) collected five kills.
 
Sharee Gordon matched Medley's high with nine kills. She had a great all-around effort, hitting .350 (9-2-20) with five blocks, including three solo rejections.
 
Samantha Renfree posted a .545 percentage with six kills and no errors (11 attempts) and Karolina Kopacz provided seven kills without an error in 21 swings (.333), adding three aces. Nathalie Breining tallied 22 assists, eight digs and four aces. Also for RUN, Sue Riley defended 12 digs and Kathy Hormaza collected nine digs and three aces.
 
Rutgers-Newark never trailed in the first or third sets. In the opening period, the Raiders were errorless and hit an impressive .526 with 10 kills in 19 attempts. Leading 4-3, the hosts unleashed a decisive 14-1 run behind the serving of Tabitha Davis and Kopacz to seize an 18-4 advantage.
 
RUN had eight kills in the second game and 12 more in the third. At 8-7 in the second set, Newark scored seven of the next eight points, including three aces (two by Breining) to take control of the game. The Raiders led from start to finish in the third set.

NJCU plays its next four matches away from home. On Thursday, October 2 NJCU travels to Glassboro to face Rowan University. On Saturday, October 4, the Knights head to Allentown, Pa. for a tri-match at Cedar Crest College with Gwynedd Mercy University.
