Records Fall as NJCU Women’s Soccer Takes Lopsided Win Over Medgar Evers, 13-0

JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Freshman forward Lauren Bustamante (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) and freshman midfielder Mudindia Saint Jean (Elizabeth, NJ/John Dwyer Technology Academy) each netted hat tricks, junior forward Orphise Saint Jean (Elizabeth, NJ/Elizabeth) and freshman back Catarina Teodosio (Newark, NJ/East Side) both scored twice and three other players tallied a marker as the New Jersey City University women's soccer team matched or surpassed numerous records during during the most lopsided game in school history—a 13-0 non-conference win over Medgar Evers College. The September 8 game at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field was NJCU's 2014 home opener.

Mudindia Saint Jean netted a hat trick and seven points.
With 13 goals and seven assists in the game, the Gothic Knights (2-0-1) amassed 33 total points while outshooting the Cougars (0-1-0) by a staggering margin of 68-0 with 38 shots on goal. NJCU held an 11-0 advantage in corner kicks and was whistled for 21 offsides. It led the game 8-0 at the intermission.
 
The Knights equaled the record for goals in a game set on October 13, 2003 in a 13-1 home win over the City College of New York in which NJCU had 35 total points. The 13-goal margin of victory breaks the previous mark of 12. It was the ninth time in program history the Knights have scored at least 10 goals in a game.
 
NJCU also set single-game school records for shots (68), shots on goal (68), shots differential (68), shots on goal differential (38), unassisted goals (6) and had the second most offsides ever whistled.
 
Freshman midfielder Alicia Umanzor (Morristown, NJ/Morristown) accounted for her first five collegiate points—three assists and one goal.
 
Junior midfielder and co-captain Amanda Filippone (Kenilworth, NJ/David Brearley) tacked on her third goal of the season while junior midfielder Christina Majette (Newark, NJ/North Hollywood, Ca.) scored her first goal as a member of the program.
 
Bustamante and Mudindia Saint Jean each added one assist to finish with seven points apiece. Filippone chalked up an assist on the eventual game-winning goal in the fourth minute. Bustamante, who scored the first two goals of the game in a span of 49 seconds in the fourth minute and again in the 12th frame, tallied 10 shots (seven on goal). Mudindia Saint Jean also collected 10 shots (six on goal), putting away the seventh, ninth and 12th goals in the 33rd, 46th and 85th minutes.

Alicia Umanzor dished three assists and scored her first
goal while playing a defensive role in a 68-0 shots differential.
Sophomore midfielder Jacque Johnson (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) added one assist while unleashing 15 shots—one shy of matching the single-game school record—with seven on goal. Eight different players attempted at least five shots for NJCU.
 
Filippone made it 4-0 in the 19th minute before Orphise Saint Jean bagged her first two collegiate goals—the fifth and sixth of the game—in the 22nd and 28th minutes. Majette (41'), Teodosio (52', 59') and Umanzor (87') rounded out the scoring.
 
Senior Brittany Hoffman (McMurray, PA/Peters Township) and junior Cassie Lubonski (Edison, NJ/Edison) each played one half in net in the club's second shutout of the season but were not challenged behind a defensive unit that included sophomore back Jubeth Buitrago (Secaucus, NJ/Secaucus), freshman back Claudia Gomez (Union City, NJ/Union City) and Teodosio.
 
Marlene Thompson made 23 saves under constant pressure for Medgar Evers; the Cougars also had two team saves.
 
NJCU next faces Brooklyn College in a non-conference game in Brooklyn, NY on Friday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m.
