New Jersey City University senior small forward
Neville Joseph (Newark, NJ/West Side) scored 23 points and senior shooting guard
Jamall McDaniel (Jersey City, NJ/Lincoln) knocked down four three-pointers on the way to 15 points as the Gothic Knights bounced back from two disappointing losses with a 66-58 win over Rutgers University-Camden on January 14.
NJCU (4-10, 2-6 NJAC) defeated Rutgers-Camden (8-7, 2-6 NJAC) for the 19th consecutive meeting and 47th time in the last 48 outings while picking up a crucial New Jersey Athletic Conference win to pull into a tie for seventh place after losing eight of the last nine games.
NJCU erased an early second half deficit with a 22-8 run and improves to 57-4 all-time against the Scarlet Raptors. The Knights shot 22-of-44 for the game, posting their best shooting performance of the season (.500), highlighted by a 60 percent accuracy rate in the second half (12-20).
Trailing, 26-24, at the half, the Scarlet Raptors opened the second half with 10 straight points, six of them by senior guard/forward
Teon Russell (Camden, NJ/Woodrow Wilson). That gave Rutgers-Camden a 34-26 lead. The Raptors opened their margin to 10 points (38-28 and 40-30) before the Gothic Knights roared back quickly.
An 18-2 run suddenly left NJCU with a 48-42 lead with 8:17 remaining. That run included four three-pointers, including two by
McDaniel and one apiece from senior guard
Justin Harte (Irvington, NJ/Irvington) and
Joseph. Joseph's trey, with 9:07 remaining in the game, gave NJCU the lead for good, 45-42.
New Jersey City built its margin to as many as 10 points, 60-50, before posting its eight-point victory to snap a two-game losing streak.
Senior guard
Jourdan Roberson (Brooklyn, NY/University) added four assists and was 6-of-7 from the line.
Russell notched 22 points for the Scarlet Raptors, while sophomore guard
Marcus Taylor (Somerdale, NJ/Sterling) added 11. Junior guard
John Tatem (Camden, NJ/Pennsauken Tech) grabbed a game-high six rebounds for the Raptors, who held a 32-27 edge off the boards.
Rutgers-Camden was 22-for-48 (45.8) from the floor and missed all 14 of its three-point attempts. The Raptors also had 23 turnovers to the Gothic Knights' 19.
