#NJCUWSOC Falls as No. 10/14 TCNJ Produces Another Shutout, 9-0

EWING, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | No. 10/14 ranked The College of New Jersey, winners of 17 of 22 New Jersey Athletic Conference championships in league history, was too much for the New Jersey City University women's soccer team on October 10, outshooting the Gothic Knights, 42-1 and prevailing 9-0, in an NJAC game at the TCNJ Soccer Complex.
 
The Lions, ranked No. 10 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) and 14th by D3soccer.com, led 6-0 at halftime based on a 29-1 margin in shots, before boasting a 13-0 differential in the second half. The Lions up their mark to 9-0-3 overall and 4-0-1 in the NJAC and with 13 points lead the league standings. NJCU falls to 4-7-1 (0-4-0 NJAC).
 
TCNJ, which has remarkably allowed just one goal the entire season, notched its 11th shutout of the year and fourth in a row.
 
TCNJ had six different players score and only three of the nine tallies were assisted. The Lions took 19:27 to get on the board but when they finally did break through, netted two goals in a span of 1:48 and five in 10:41. TCNJ scored its third, fourth and fifth in a stretch of 2:18 at the 27:50, 29:15 and 30:08 marks, with the final two separated by 53 seconds. The Lions added other scores in the 43rd, 65th, 68th and 90th minutes.
 
Lauren Malajian produced a hat trick for the Lions. Coming off the bench and playing 31 minutes, she netted the third (28'), fifth (31') and sixth (43') tallies, giving her five on the year. Elizabeth Thoresen assisted on the second goal and scored the fourth goal (30'). Kate Galgano also chalked up a pair of goals in a second half reserve role, putting away the seventh (65') and ninth (90') markers.
 
Taylor Lusardi's fifth goal of the year was the game-winner. Marissa Scognamiglio and Kailey Russo also had goals for TCNJ. Justine Larocca and Hannah Richman were credited with the other assists. The Lions had 28 players see action.
 
NJCU senior goalkeeper Cassie Lubonski (Edison, NJ/Edison) notched 11 saves. It was her fifth career effort of double figure saves.
 
The Lions had three goalkeepers contribute to the shutout. Jessica Weeder started and was the winner, making one save in 56:26. Briyanna Femia (23:40) and Kelly Gallagher (9:54) did not face a shot.
 
The Lions took all 11 corner kicks in the game. NJCU's lone shot was on goal by freshman forward Katherin Merino (Harrison, NJ/Harrison).

  • TCNJ leads the all-time series, 21-0. All have been shutouts.
 
WHAT'S NEXT?
NJCU visits Ramapo College in NJAC action on Wednesday, October 14 in Mahwah, NJ (3 p.m.). Ramapo leads the series, 17-4-1. The Roadrunners edged NJCU, 2-1 in one overtime in the last meeting on October 15, 2014 in Jersey City, winning in the 95th minute.
