NEWARK, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Rutgers University-Newark led 1-0 at the half and outshot the Gothic Knights 16-3 in the second half before adding a pair of insurance goals in the final 10 minutes in a 3-0 shutout of the
New Jersey City University men's soccer team, in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game played in a cold, light rain on October 3 at Alumni Field.
Rutgers-Newark posted a conference shutout for the second time this week to up its mark to 10-3-0 and 3-1-0 in the NJAC. NJCU (1-10, 0-4 NJAC, lost 8) was shutout for the third straight game and sixth time this season.
Rutgers-Newark outshot NJCU 22-4 and held a 7-0 margin on corner kicks and keeper
Matt Broomall needed one save in 90 minutes for the Scarlet Raiders' fourth shutout of the season.
Anthony DeRisi scored the first and third goals for the regionally-ranked Raiders, giving him four on the season. RUN scored in the 18th, 82nd and 86th minutes.
DeRisi scored the only goal the hosts would need at 17:19 when he headed in a cross from the corner by
Damjan Agaj.
Sebastian Gostynski, who played the ball to
Agaj on the run, also earned an assist on the play. RUN led 1-0 at the break, but was limited to six shots in the opening 45.
NJCU stayed in the game late but the Raiders scored a key insurance goal at 81:49.
Hubert Dul played a high arching cross to
Timothy Farias, who beat a defender and finished his third goal of the year into the left side of the net.
DeRisi added the third goal just under four minutes later when a corner kick caromed to him and he hit a shot from 10 yards out that deflected in.
Freshman goalkeeper
John Riggs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) made seven saves for NJCU.
Dul and
DeRisi equaled for a game-high five shots;
Dul put three on target.
OF NOTE:
- Rutgers-Newark leads the all-time series, 22-17-2, and has won the last seven meetings.
- RUN is ranked seventh in the NSCAA NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region.
WHAT'S NEXT?NJCU heads to Galloway, NJ on October 7 to face Stockton University at 7 p.m. The Ospreys (8-3, 2-1 NJAC) have a non-conference home game against Ursinus on October 5 prior to playing NJCU. Stockton is currently 10th in the South Atlantic Region—one of six NJAC schools currently among the region's Top 10. Stockton leads the all-time series, 29-7-6. The clubs played to a 0-0 draw (2 OT) in Jersey City on October 18, 2014.
