Kean Too Strong for NJCU Women’s Hoops

UNION, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Kean University outscored the New Jersey City University women's basketball team 23-3 in the second quarter to claim a decisive halftime advantage and the Cougars took a New Jersey Athletic Conference matchup, 79-30, on December 12 at Harwood Arena.
 
Kean (7-2, 4-1 NJAC) won its fourth consecutive game and led 39-9 at halftime. The Cougars outscored NJCU (1-8, 0-5 NJAC, lost six) 15-8 in the third quarter and 29-13 in the fourth.
 
Kean shot 40.5 percent overall (32-79) and forced 33 Gothic Knight turnovers, thanks to 23 steals, while only committing 14 giveaways itself. Kean held a 37-6 margin in points off giveaways.
 
Meanwhile, the Cougars held a 52-16 advantage in points in the paint, 20-2 on the fast break and got a 44-10 boost in bench scoring.
 
The Knights struggled from the field, shooting 21.3 percent overall (10-47). The game got away from the Knights in the first half when the visitors shot 3-of-24 for 12.5 percent, including 1-for-12 in the second quarter. NJCU did not hit a three-pointer in the game (0-7) and Kean actually struggled from long range as well (3-23, 13.0 percent).
 
Kean had three players net double figures, led by Marajiah Bacon, who had 14 points (7-17 FG), six rebounds, four assists and four steals. Tori Schweyher scored 14 (4-10 FG) and Brianna Skinner finished with 10 points on 5-of-7 shooting with six boards. Jaquetta Owens chipped in nine points (3-6 FG) and six steals and Jante Bracewell collected nine points.
 
In defeat for NJCU, sophomore power forward/center Sharaunda Fiedtkou (West Orange, NJ/Bayonne) returned after missing two games and had a game-high 10 rebounds with eight points. In a rough outing, junior point guard Jazz Randall (Parsippany, NJ/West Orange) led NJCU with nine points.

In the final game of the 2015 portion of its schedule, NJCU is home on Saturday, December 19 at 2 p.m. when it faces Bryn Athyn College in a non-conference women's basketball game at the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center (Coach Charlie Brown Court). It will be the second meeting between NJCU and the Lions (1-3); NJCU won the first-ever meeting in 2014-15.
