CAMDEN, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Manhattanville College led 1-0 after a 40th minute own goal before scoring three times in a span of 4:05 from the 81st minute on with
New Jersey City University pushing up, as the Valiants knocked off NJCU, 4-0, in the second round of the 15th annual Cialella Soccer Classic, hosted by Rutgers-Camden on September 13.
It was the first-ever regular season meeting between two schools that had previously only met in the post-season and it was evenly played with M-Ville (3-2) edging NJCU (1-4) by one shot in each period and 20-18 overall. There were 16 combined corner kicks in the game (9-7, Manhattanville).
Freshman goalkeeper
John Riggs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville), who made 12 saves in an opening-round 1-0 overtime loss to No. 1 ranked Christopher Newport University, stopped seven shots to earn a spot on the all-tournament team with junior back
Davauni Brown (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech).
Oskar Martinsson was involved in all three goals scored for Manhattanville that came in the 81st, 85th and 86th minutes, including back-to-back tallies in a span of 39 seconds. He finished with two goals and an assist while
Hugo Landberg added a goal and an assist.
M-Ville led 1-0 at the half after an NJCU defender inadvertently played a ball back into his own net from outside the 18. M-Ville earned a goal at 80:56 when
Martinsson one-timed a corner kick from
Landberg out of the air.
With NJCU pushing up, seeking to get on the board with less than 10 minutes remaining, the Valiants took advantage of the Knights playing two back as
Landberg scored on a shot off the crossbar off a cross from
Martinsson at 84:22
. Martinsson added a fourth goal off a deflection at 85:01.
Willie Silber made five saves in 84:28 before
Markus Schwarz played out the final 5:32 without a stop.
Brown had four shots for NJCU with three on goal. Rookie midfielder
Abdou Touray (Jersey City, NJ/Ferris) also had four shots.
Martinsson led M-Ville with four attempts, scoring on both shots on target,

- First meeting since November 14, 2004.
- Previous meetings with Manhattanville had both come in the post-season—the November 7, 2001 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Metro Quarterfinals (won, 4-2) and the 2004 ECAC championship game (won, 3-1).
- Christopher Newport and Rutgers-Camden tied, 0-0 (2 OT) in the other second round game. CNU earned the Cialella title on the third tie-breaker, the least amount of goals allowed in the event, following a 1-0 overtime win against New Jersey City University Saturday and Sunday's scoreless tie. The first two tie-breakers, head-to-head results and tournament goal differential (plus one) for both the Captains and the Scarlet Raptors were the same.
