Quick Start Lifts Kean Over NJCU, 5-0

JERSEY CITY, NJ (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Kean University scored three times on its first five shots and shutout the New Jersey City University men's soccer team, 5-0,  in a New Jersey Athletic Conference game on September 30 at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

The Cougars (10-1, 2-0 NJAC) won their eighth consecutive game, outshooting NJCU (1-9, 0-3 NJAC, lost 7), 18-6. Kean, ranked No. 8 in the NSCAA NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA, led 3-0 at the half based on goals in the 11th, 18th and 32nd minutes.

The Cougars posted their sixth shutout of the season and now have allowed just six goals in 11 games, outscoring opponents, 46-6. It was Kean's fifth game of at least five goals this year.

Junior midfielder Kevin Olaya (Elizabeth, NJ/Alexander Hamilton) netted a brace with his third and fourth goals of the season in the 18th and 32nd minutes while freshman midfielder Mateo Castro (Bogota, Colombia) assisted on the first two tallies of the game.

Sophomore forward Sev Kherlopian (Bradley Beach, NJ/Demarest), who entered the game leading the NJAC in five offensive categories, scored his 11th goal and 28th point while producing his league-best fifth game-winner in the 11th minute when he slipped a shot through the legs of the Gothic Knight starting keeper just outside the penalty mark after running onto an onsides pass from Castro at the midfield circle at 10:32.

Olaya made it 2-0 on a header off a left side corner from Castro at 17:40, before beating a defender to the left endline and scoring on a difficult angle at 31:17, on a play assisted by freshman forward Timofei Kharisov (Hinton, WV).

Junior forward Kenny Rocha (Springfield, NJ/Jonathan Dayton) added his second goal of the season in the 70th minute off a defensive miscue before freshman midfielder Erick Reyes (Summit, NJ/Summit) added his third of the season in the 88th minute off a helper from Brandon Gomez (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson). Kean also hit the post in the 63rd minute.

Senior Tyler Krychkowski (North Arlington, NJ/North Arlington), who is typically NJCU's starting forward but has been battling a leg injury, started in goal for the first time since playing every second in net for the Gothic Knights in 2014. He played 83:16 and made two saves against four goals before freshman John Riggs (Robbinsville, NJ/Robbinsville) saw the last 6:44 of the game (one goal against).

Kean freshman keeper Chidi Iloka (Trenton, NJ/Nottingham) made two saves to improve to 7-0-0 on the season in net. He posted his league-best fourth shutout.

NJCU's best scoring chance came at 84:16 when freshman forward Reggie Nyema (Trenton, NJ/Trenton Central) hit the far left post and the rebound caromed right into the middle of the six-yard box, but Kean was able to cover the loose ball.

OF NOTE:
  • Kean leads the all-time series, 36-18-3 (won 2). The 5-0 margin was the largest since 1997 (lost, 9-0)
  • Kean's nine points in the D3soccer.com national poll would be equivalent to a No. 44 national listing.
  • Kean's eight-game winning streak is the longest active streak in the league.
  • Kean has an incredible 141-37 margin in shots on goal this season and 293-96 differential in total shots.

WHAT'S NEXT?
NJCU heads to Newark, NJ on Saturday, October 3 in an early start (11 a.m.) to face Rutgers-Newark in NJAC action. RUN, voted seventh in the South Atlantic Region, leads the all-time series, 21-17-2, and has won the last six meetings, including a 4-1 win last season in Jersey City (October 4, 2014).
