RIVERDALE, NY (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Sophomore forward
Laura Bustamante (Rockaway, NJ/Butler) turned a giveaway into a golden goal winner 7:36 into the first overtime session as the
New Jersey City University women's soccer earned its first win of the 2015 season, upending the host team, College of Mount Saint Vincent, in the opening round of the Hudson Classic on September 5.
NJCU (1-2) was outshot 20-11, but its only shot of overtime was enough to lift it into the tournament finals against Lehman College on September 6. Lehman knocked off SUNY Delhi, 6-3, in the other opening round contest.
In the 98th minute,
Bustamante netted her first goal of the season and second career game-winner. With NJCU pressuring,
Bustamante won the ball from a Dolphin defender, turned, took one touch and unleashed an excellent 25-yard shot that sailed over the opposing keeper's head and in to end it.
It was the first goal in 71:19 of game action after the clubs played a scoreless second half.
NJCU struck first a just 6:06 into the game as junior midfielder
Kaydee Murphy (Bayonne, NJ/Holy Family Academy) slipped a pass from the left wing into the center where freshman forward
Katherin Merino (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) netted her first NCAA points for a 1-0 lead.
MSV tied it in the 27th minute as
Courtney LaTorre put away a shot under the crossbar on a free ball played back to her from
Victoria Astorino.
While MSV outshot NJCU 11-4 in the opening half, it was fairly even in the second half when the host Dolphins held a 7-6 margin.
Senior goalkeeper
Cassie Lubonski (Edison, NJ/Edison) reached double figures in saves for the second time in three career starts and her 11 stops gave her her first NCAA win.
Elizabeth Martin (three saves) lost for MSV.

Bustamante (three shots, two SOG) and sophomore defender
Catarina Teodosio (Newark, NJ/East Side) (three shots), combined for 11 of 12 shots for the Knights.
