#NJCUWSOC Drops Emotional Contest in Staten Island

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The College of Staten Island led 1-0 at halftime after a penalty kick with 26 seconds left in the period and added two goals in the final five minutes when caution cards accumulated for a 3-0 win over the New Jersey City University women's soccer team on September 5.

NJCU (0-3) played the final 10 minutes a man down and Staten Island (2-0) had an 11-to-9 player advantage for the final 9:17 of action when the referee issued a second red card 16 seconds later. In all there were nine cards pulled in the game—eight against the visiting Gothic Knights, and 13 of the 16 fouls whistled in the game were charged to NJCU.

CSI had a 16-8 margin in shots, primarily late in the game. The Dolphins held a 7-5 edge in shots at halftime, including a penalty kick by sophomore forward Nicole Mignone (Seaford, N.Y.) at 44:34 that stands as the game-winner.

Up two players, CSI added a goal early in the 86th minute when senior midfielder Kaitlin Russo (Staten Island, N.Y.) scored off a Nermina Bracic (St. Louis, Mo.) through ball (85:15). Junior midfielder Lauren Smith (Islip, N.Y.) scored from 30 yards out with 49 seconds remaining.

Dominique Jackson (Bayonne, NJ/Bayonne) made five saves for NJCU. Freshman Kaila DeBenedetto (Staten Island, N.Y.) stopped three shots for the shutout for CSI.
