Jynaisha Martin (Jersey City, NJ/Hackensack) scored a career-high 12 points in her first career start for the
New Jersey City University women's basketball team but it was not enough as NJCU fell to The College of New Jersey, 95-32, on January 27 inside the John J. Moore Athletics and Fitness Center ("Coach Charlie Brown Court). It was the second time in six days that both New Jersey Athletic Conference sides played each other.
Second place TCNJ (15-5, 10-3 NJAC) shot 52.1 percent (37-71) on the night as they outrebounded the Gothic Knights (0-16, 0-13 NJAC), 56-28 and held a 44-4 points in the paint advantage. NJCU shot 13-of-58 overall.
Martin led the Gothic Knights with a career-high 12 points in 33 minutes. Junior point guard
Jesenia Montalvo (Hillside, NJ/Bayonne) scored seven in 29 minutes of play, while freshman forward/center
Gianna Benacquista (Belleville, NJ/Belleville) secured six rebounds (five defensive) and added four points.
Sophomore Forward
Jen Byrne (Medford, N.J.) poured in 23 points (10-15 FG) and narrowly missed a double-double performance with nine rebounds (seven defensive) and six assists in an efficient 31 minutes. Freshman forward
Shannon Devitt (Westfield, N.J.) scored a career-high 18 points and secured 11 rebounds for her ninth double-double performance on the season. The six-time NJAC Rookie of the Week selection also added four assists, three blocks, and three steals in 25 minutes.
Junior guard
Nicole Shatsky (Marlboro, N.J.) chipped in 11 points on 4-of-8 shooting, grabbed five caroms (four defensive) and forced three steals in 23 minutes. Senior guard
Charlotte Schum (East Hanover, N.J.) added 10 points (3-5 3FG) in 20 minutes of work, while junior guard
Kate O'Leary (Trumbull, Conn.) chipped in nine points all from beyond the arc (3-5) in 12 minutes.

- Series: 62nd meeting. TCNJ leads, 59-3 (Won last 19).
- Jynaisha Martin (Jersey City, NJ/Hackensack) scored a career-high 12 points against TCNJ. Her previous career-high points in a game was 11 points against Rutgers-Camden on January 20 and TCNJ on January 22, respectively.
- Jesenia Montalvo (Hillside, NJ/Bayonne) scored seven points for the third time in four games.
UP NEXT?:
NJCU travels to Kean University in Union, N.J. on Wednesday, January 31 for the second game between the sides this season. Earlier this season Kean earned an 85-47 victory on December 6, 2017 in Jersey, City N.J. and leads the all-time series, 53-12. The Cougars have won the last seven meetings.
