Five in the First Propel Montclair State over #NJCUWSoccer

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Five goals in the first 40 minutes pushed Montclair State University (9-2-3, 4-1-1 NJAC) past New Jersey City University (4-8-0, 0-6-0 NJAC), 5-0, in New Jersey Athletic Conference action at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field on October 10. Madison Martino (Mount Arlington, N.J.) led the way for the Red Hawks with five points on two goals and an assist.

Montclair State, who were ranked in the top 10 in the region as recently as last week, put only six shots on target the entire match, but five of those made their way to the back of the net, giving the game its 5-0 final line.

The Red Hawks opened their account in the sixth minute, as Emily Beenders (Rahway, N.J.) scored her 11th goal of the season, moving her into a tie for second in the NJAC in goals scored. The goal was assisted by Martino who had a hand in each of the first three goals for MSU. It was Martino's second assist of the season.

Martino then proceeded to score two of her own, first finishing off a Michaela Knoblock (South Brunswick, N.J.) pass across the face of goal, and then putting the finishing touch on a pretty through ball from her strike partner Beenders. The assists were the seventh and fourth of the season for Knoblock and Beenders respectively, with the former now owning the lead in the NJAC for assists in 2018.

Maddie Musico (Barnegat, N.J.) did everything on her own for the fourth goal, beating a pair of NJCU defenders before blazing one into the back of the net past NJCU freshman goalkeeper Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge). Gabrielle Tancredi (Sicklerville, N.J.) scored the fifth and final goal of the game in the 40th minute, putting the finishing touch on a golden set-up from Kaitlyn Scrivanich (Paramus, N.J.).

For the Knights, they tallied five shots on the game, two of which were on target. The best chance for NJCU in the first half came when junior forward Rosa Bonilla (Roselle Park, NJ/Roselle Park) was strong on the goalline, pushing past her defender only to have her close-range shot blocked at the last second. Bonilla led the team with her two shots overall.

The other solid chance for NJCU came late in the second half when, after being triple-teamed most of the match, junior forward Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) finally got a decent look at the goal, which she fired just over the bar.

In the second half, neither team scored, with Lee-Sam playing a very strong sweeper keeper for NJCU. Lee-Sam technically made only one save, but her presence was strong along the backline for NJCU all game, cutting off numerous deep balls and coming out to eliminate angles and force shots wide.

For the Red Hawks, freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Freewalt (Alexandria, Va.) got the win, making one save in her 45 minutes of play. Sophomore goalkeeper Phoebe Bledsoe (West Caldwell, N.J.) played the second half for the Hawks, making one save of her own. MSU also had one team save.
