GALLOWAY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | Another opponent got ahead of
New Jersey City University (4-9-0, 0-7-0 NJAC) early, with
Stockton University (12-3-3, 5-2-1 NJAC) netting four first-half goals and then locking down for a stout defensive effort in a 4-0 New Jersey Athletic Conference win on October 20 at the G. Larry James Stadium.
Â
The Gothic Knights turned in a strong defensive effort in the second half, going a woman down in the 50th minute but not allowing another Osprey goal that entire final 40 minute stretch. Freshman goalkeeper
Sheyla Salazar (Guttenberg, NJ/North Bergen), starting in place of regular starter
Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) who was starting as a two-sport athlete with the NJCU women's bowling team on Saturday, made a career-high 13 saves, keeping Stockton off the board for the final 53:08 of the match.
Â
The Knights had three shots on the game, two of which were on goal. Junior midfielder
Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) and senior midfielder
Katherin Merino (Harrison, NJ/Harrison) had the two attempts on goal, while senior midfielder
Karen Tuesta (Clifton, NJ/Clifton) had the off-target shot.
Â
Stockton senior goalkeeper
Nicole Pallante (Brick, N.J.) played the full 90, getting her 10th shutout of the season for Stockton, the highest such figure in the NJAC this season.
Â
The Ospreys got on the board in the 12th minute, with freshman midfielder
Susan Porambo (Millersville, Pa.) beating
Salazar in a one-on-one opportunity for her sixth goal of the season. Sophomore mid
Kara Staudenmayer (Cinnaminson, N.J.) was credited with the assists.
Â
The next two goals came from the same source—sophomore forward
Salena LeDonne (Parsippany, N.J.)—and within 89 seconds of each other. First, junior midfielder
Emily Frazee (Port Republic, N.J.) sent
LeDonne in on a breakaway, which
LeDonne finished off.
LeDonne wasn't done, however, tallying her second goal of the match, and 10th of the season, under a minute a half later, as she beat a pair of NJCU defenders and slid the ball past the goalie.
Â
The final goal of the game came for Stockton in the 37th minute, when freshman midfielder
Julianna Kaiser (Tabernacle, N.J.) put home a rebound off a shot from junior defender
Madison Dorney (Washington Twp., N.J.) to give the match its 4-0 final scoreline. Stockton outshot NJCU, 28-3, including 17-1 in the first half.
