Overtime PK the Difference as William Paterson Nips #NJCUMSoccer, 2-1

JERSEY CITY, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | A physical New Jersey Athletic Conference men's soccer game that saw a combined 10 caution cards issues issued ended on a penalty kick being awarded midway through the first overtime period with William Paterson University cashing in. Junior midfielder Cameron Allen (Old Bridge, N.J.) scored his second goal of the game 3:50 into the first OT as WP edged NJCU, 2-1, in an entertaining NJAC contest on September 22 at the Robert L. McNulty Memorial Soccer Field.

Allen, who also scored on a free kick in the 10th minute, netted his second and third goals of the season for the Pioneers (5-2-1, 1-1-0 NJAC), the No. 9 ranked team in the NCAA Division III South Atlantic Region, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

With NJCU (5-3-0, 0-2-0 NJAC) playing a man down for the final 17:31 of regulation plus overtime, freshman forward Edric De Paula (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) produced his fifth goal of the season, wrapping an 82nd minute free kick just outside the 18 around the left side of the wall, curling a low shot inside the far left post. The loss snapped NJCU's two-game win streak.

All three goals in the game were unassisted. NJCU had the better offensive chances in the game, outshooting William Paterson, 17-13, but WP had the only shot of the overtime period.

Allen, who slipped the winning PK into the lower near right side to win it for the guests after junior forward Keysean Brant-Sharp drew an overtime foul on the right side of the six, gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead just 9:07 into the first half, blasting a free kick from outside the 18 to the right of the wall.

NJCU put 11 of its 17 shots on goal and the Pioneers win can largely be credited to the play of WP junior goalkeeper Kyle Quigley (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington Regional), who made a career-high matching 10 saves (11/12/2016 vs. Moravian, 10 saves, 2 OTs).

No sequence was more important than in the 25th minute when Quigley made a sliding stop of an attempt by junior forward Koshane Marshall (Montclair, NJ/Montclair) on the far post, then four seconds later denied sophomore forward Luis Laing (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) on the opposite post.

Sophomore keeper Eric Lopes Silva (Newark, NJ/Newark East Side) made five of his six saves in the second half, including an incredible diving thwart of Allen on the near post in the 64th minute to keep the deficit 1-0.

OF NOTE:
  • Series record: 61st meeting; William Paterson leads all-time, 37-20-4.
  • Theo Sanoh (Jersey City, NJ/Dickinson) and Edric De Paula (Newark, NJ/Newark Tech) have combined to score 13 of NJCU's 16 total goals this season; the Knights have surrendered just seven goals.

UP NEXT:
  • NJCU heads to Union, N.J. for a 7:30 p.m. night conference matchup with Kean University (4-3-1, 0-2-0 NJAC) on Wednesday, September 26.
