BROOKLYN, N.Y. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | The
New Jersey City University women's volleyball team (3-2) played their first road match of the season on September 10, falling in four sets to the Bears of St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn), 3-1, by set scores of 25-21, 13-25, 25-18, 25-19.
The Bears (1-2) committed 10 fewer attack errors than the Knights on the evening. The only set that the Knights committed fewer errors than the Bears was the second, which was the lone NJCU set win. This was the first time the Bears have beaten the Knights in seven meetings.
In defeat, five Gothic Knights reached double figures in digs, led by freshman
Xarial Chandler (East Orange, NJ/University), who led the way with her second career double-double, finishing with a team-high 12 kills and 14 digs.
Freshman
Katrina Nguyendon (Union, NJ/Union) had 23 of the 29 NJCU assists on the night and added 17 digs for her third double-double of the season. Freshman libero
Bella Sunahara (Parker, CO/Legend) had 17 digs while senior outside
Stephanie Duque (West New York, NJ/Memorial) and sophomore outside
Lola Vega defended 14 and 13 digs respectively. Sophomore middle blocker
Leah Seickendick (Hoboken, NJ/Hudson Catholic) had an impressive three solo blocks.
Cristina Morales (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the way for St. Joseph's attack, finishing with a dozen of the team's 32 kills. On defense, the Bears had four players sporting more than 15 digs.
Kaitlyn Intindola (Brooklyn, N.Y.) was the creator for the offense with 18 of the team's 27 assists, adding 19 digs for a double-double.
Valentina Urgo finished with 22 digs and
Carol Melo tallied 16 digs.
The first set was a closely contested affair, with the Knights making a late push, but ultimately coming up short. In the second, the Knights were excellent, scoring the first four points and rattling off 12 straight in the middle of the set. The run came under the service of
Duque, with
Vega nabbing a pair of kills along the way.
The Bears were able to bounce back in the third, however, using an 8-0 run of their own late in the game to go back up, 2-1. The Bears then closed out the match by taking nine straight nearly right off the bat in the fourth, going up 9-1 and never looking back.
