MEDIA, Pa. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | It's official,
Mallensy Vargas (North Bergen, NJ/Memorial) cannot be stopped, opponents can only hope to slow her down — and they're struggling to even do that.
Vargas unleashed three goals and three assists and freshman forward
Arame Diouf (Weehawken, NJ/Memorial) netted her first career hat trick as the
New Jersey City University women's soccer team won their fourth straight game, topping host Penn State Brandywine, 6-3 on September 14.
For the second consecutive game,
Vargas was involved in every NJCU goal. She has now has a goal and an assist on the last 11 NJCU goals and has produced an unthinkable 25 points in three games this week alone. Of the 16 goals NJCU (4-2-0) has scored this week,
Vargas has contributed to 15 of them, notching 10 goals and five assists. NJCU still has one game left this weekend.
Meanwhile,
Vargas has achieved the second most points in a three-game span in school history. The record is 28 points in three games by future Hall-of-Famer
Jennifer Albuja, who had 28 points in three games (13 goals, 2 assists) from September 6-13, 2008—an achievement that is believed to be an NCAA all-time record.
Albuja would add six points in her next game when she netted a fourth straight hat trick for a 34-point (16 goals, 2 assists) four-game stretch.
However, while further research will need to be conducted,
Vargas' 25 points this week are believed to be the most points in the same calendar week in NCAA history.
Vargas is the first Gothic Knight to net three consecutive hat tricks since future Hall-of-Famer
Julia Caseres had 22 points (10 goals, 2 assists) in a three-game span on September 7, 10 and 11, 2010.
Furthermore,
Vargas surpassed the 50-goal plateau for her career in the win and now has 52 goals and 17 assists for 121 career points.
Diouf, who came into the game with two goals this year, upped that total to five. Sophomore goalkeeper
Cidney Lee-Sam (Old Bridge, NJ/Old Bridge) had her first career assist on the final goal of the first half as the Knights led 5-2 at the break.
"It was a hard fought match," fourth-year head coach
Anthony Tuesta noted. "Penn State was aggressive and their forward and center mid were fast and skillful. Our team did a good job in adjusting and shifting to defend."
Although it was
Vargas who ruled the day, it was
Diouf, the NJAC Rookie of the Week, who scored the opener, her third goal of the season, and it came with an assist from
Vargas in the 24th minute.
"Our team is coming together and the chemistry keeps on building,"
Tuesta said. "A prime example is
Mallensy having three assists to
Arame. The girls are learning to play together, and they're learning to adjust and work through the mistakes."
Less than 50 seconds later, it was
Vargas on the finishing side of things, as a giveaway just after the restart put the senior scorer in a one-on-one position that she just doesn't miss on — 2-0 to the Gothic Knights.
Similar to their last game, it was a glut of goals all in a very short span, as each team tallied within the 26th minute, first a
Diouf lob to beat the Brandywine keeper, and then the first goal of the game for the Nittany Lions, as they made it 3-1 at the 25:43 mark.
The first half wasn't done yet when it came to scoring, however, as
Vargas took advantage of another Brandywine giveaway to bury her second of the game in the lower left corner.
"
Mallensy had another solid game, she looks comfortable on the field and she's getting her teammates involved,"
Tuesta said in a rather large understatement.
The Nittany Lions once again got back to within two quickly, however, as
Brianna Banks (Philadelphia, Pa.) notched her second tally of the day less than a minute later, giving the game a 4-2 score in favor of NJCU.
Remarkably,
Vargas snuck one more goal into the first half, wrapping up the seven-goal half in the 41st minute, as
Lee-Sam sent a booming kick downfield which
Vargas corralled, swerved around the defense, and finished off for second first-half hat trick in the last three games.
In addition to her assist, NJCU goalie
Lee-Sam had an excellent game between the posts, making seven saves, and helping lead the Knights to victory despite being out-shot 19-16.
In the second half, things were a bit calmer, with
Diouf scoring the final NJCU goal in the 54th minute—once again assisted by
Vargas—while
Banks got a hat trick of her own in the 64th minute, but could not bring the Nittany Lions any closer than the game's 6-3 final.
"
Arame had the best game of her young career and she had solid strikes that ended up in the back of the net,"
Tuesta explained. "This is helping her build her confidence."
