PATCHOGUE, N.Y. — The New Jersey City University men's volleyball team dropped its first Skyline Conference match of the season tonight, Thursday, March 18, falling on the road to St. Joseph's College-L.I. in three sets (25-11, 25-20, 25-20).
NJCU (4-3, 4-1 Skyline) trailed 7-6 early in the first set against the Golden Eagles (4-0, 4-0 Skyline), but St. Joe's managed to hold an 18-5 advantage the rest of the way to take the set 25-11. The Gothic Knights would recover a bit in the next two sets, falling by just five points in each.
Despite not leading in the second set, NJCU stayed within striking distance throughout, eventually trailing by just one late at 20-19 before the Golden Eagles closed out the 25-20 win. Sophomore
James Bajor (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) recorded five of his team-high eight kills during this set.
The third and final set was much the same as the second, with the Gothic Knights falling 25-20. The set was back and forth for its entirety until the two squads were knotted up at 19-19. But once again, St. Joe's was able to close it out. Sophomore
Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) finished with five kills on the night, with four coming in this set.
Highlights:
- Bajor's eight kills was the second-highest total of any players on the night. He added eight digs as well, which was second on NJCU.
- Reigning Skyline and New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Player of the Week sophomore
Martin Chromulak (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) notched six kills and a block.
- DaSilva chipped in a pair of blocks with his five kills.
NJCU returns to the court next Thursday, March 25, at 7:00 p.m. for a road Skyline match at Sarah Lawrence College in Bronxville, N.Y.
