WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis program has achieved its historic first victory since its restart from the late 1970s. The Gothic Knights defeated William Paterson University in New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) competition today, Tuesday, March 30, by a score of 6-1.
NJCU (1-1, 1-1 NJAC) started off the afternoon by winning both matches at first and second doubles to take an early 2-0. The teams did not play third doubles. Sophomore
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani ) and freshman
Shirley Colonia (Alexander Hamilton Prep/Elizabeth, N.J.) teamed up against the Pioneers (0-1, 0-1 NJAC) at first doubles and came away with the 8-1 victory. Freshman
Lockslea Mayers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) and senior
Hana Agarrouj (Agadir, Morocco/Lycée Mohamed Zerktouni) paired up at second doubles for an 8-1 win of their own.
Heading into singles play, the Gothic Knights took an early 3-0 lead when Zorzan made quick work of her foe at first singles in straight scoreless sets, 6-0, 6-0. Mayers was next to finish at fifth singles, also winning 6-0, 6-0, to make it 4-0 on the afternoon. Colonia was able to clinch the match with NJCU's fifth win on the day as she won at third singles, 6-0, 6-1. The Gothic Knights notched one more win, this time at fourth singles when freshman
Karolen Ebrahim (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) won, 6-0, 6-1.
