WEST WINDSOR, N.J. (NJCUGothicKnights.com) | When
New Jersey City University relaunched its women's tennis program for the first time since the late 1970s, the ultimate goal was one day being able to challenge The College of New Jersey — the 37-time New Jersey Athletic Conference champions and a program which has never lost a conference match in the history of the league. In the first-ever meeting between the schools on April 10, 2021, the Gothic Knights experienced first-hand the challenge they will face going forward.
Despite an impressive showing at first singles from sophomore
Giada Zorzan, the Gothic Knights dropped a 9-0 decision to TCNJ (4-0, 2-0 NJAC) in action at Mercer County Park. With the loss, NJCU, which was coming off a 6-1 road win against William Paterson on March 30, dropped to 1-2 overall and in league play.
On a day where the NJCU men's tennis team achieved history by stunning the defending NJAC champion Lions, 5-4, the TCNJ women were not ready to let go of the most remarkable record in the history of collegiate tennis. Since 1982, TCNJ has won every conference championship ever contested and the Lions have never lost an NJAC match. Ever. TCNJ improved its all-time conference record to 190-0.
Zorzan, the Milan, Italy native and transfer from Southern Arkansas, gave TCNJ's
Charlotte Roarty all she could handle before ultimately falling in two sets, 7-5, 6-2.
TCNJ won second through fifth singles by similar 6-0, 6-0 results and claimed all three doubles matches — the first two by 8-0 outcomes.
UP NEXT:
The Gothic Knights look to even their NJAC mark at .500 when the squad returns to the courts on Saturday, April 17 at 12 p.m. against Stockton University in Galloway, N.J. The Ospreys (1-0, 1-0 NJAC) finished second in the league a year ago (9-1, 5-1 NJAC).
