MAHWAH, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team, after a couple of postponements, finally got back to work this afternoon, Monday, April 19, against New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Ramapo College. The Gothic Knights stood tough, but ultimately fell to the Roadrunners 6-1, with the teams not competing at third doubles or sixth singles.
NJCU (1-3, 1-3 NJAC) was originally supposed to host Ramapo (3-2, 3-2 NJAC) at the West Orange Tennis Club in West Orange, N.J., on Thursday, April 1, then rescheduled for Monday, April 12, but due to continued conflicts, ended up facing the Roadrunners — on the road — earlier this afternoon.
The squad fell behind 2-0 after doubles play, however the first pair of sophomore
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani ) and freshman
Lockslea Mayers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) gave Ramapo a run for its money with a close 8-4 loss.
In singles play, Zorzan — who is now 3-1 individually on the season — made quick work of her opponent at first singles, 6-0, 6-1, and looks like a definite contender for NJAC Rookie of the Year, as well as All-NJAC honors — she's still eligible for rookie honors due to last season's blanket eligibility waiver granted at all three Divisional levels, having played last season for Division II Southern Arkansas University. Unfortunately, the other four Gothic Knights fell in their singles matches in straight scoreless sets to bring the afternoon to an end.
What's Next
Should everything go as scheduled, NJCU will finally host the first home match in program history this Wednesday afternoon, April 21, at 12:30 p.m. against Kean University at the West Orange Tennis Club. The Gothic Knights will then close out their abbreviated regular season on the road on Friday, April 23, in Galloway, N.J., at 4:00 p.m. against Stockton University — another match postponed from its original date, Saturday, April 17.
