WEST ORANGE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team hit a monumental milestone today, Wednesday, April 21, as the Gothic Knights hosted the first home match in program history. NJCU posted a strong performance — led by sophomore
Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani ) and freshman
Shirley Colonia (Elizabeth, N.J./Alexander Hamilton Prep) — but ultimately was defeated by New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe Kean University, 6-3, at the West Orange Tennis Club.
The Gothic Knights (1-4, 1-4 NJAC) started the afternoon off with a convincing 8-0 victory at first doubles behind the pair of Zorzan and Colonia to take the early 1-0 lead. However, the Cougars (1-4, 1-4 NJAC) took the next two matches and the 2-1 lead heading into singles play.
Once again, Zorzan made quick work of her opponent at first singles (6-0, 3-0 inj.), as her match was on track to finish first before her opponent pulled out due to cramping to make it a 2-2 match overall. Second, third, fourth and fifth singles all finished in favor of Kean, however, and the Cougars locked in the victory.
Despite that, the final match of the afternoon — sixth singles — was a back and forth affair that Colonia eventually emerged victorious in, 7-6(7-4), 6-3, to pick up her second win on the day.
Zorzan is now 4-1 on the season, all at first singles, while Colonia is 2-2 on the year in a combination of matches between second, third and sixth singles. As a doubles pair, the duo is 2-0 on the year, with both matches at first doubles.
