Almonte Homers as Softball Falls at Montclair in NJAC Doubleheader

MONTCLAIR, N.J. — The New Jersey City University softball team, led by senior infielder Dulce Almonte (Jersey City, N.J./Snyder via County Prep) and freshman infielder/pitcher Emily Tunney (Mays Landing, N.J./Oak Crest), faced off with Montclair State University today, Tuesday, April 20, for a pair of New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) games. Almonte knocked the first home run of her collegiate career, while Tunney went 4-for-5, but the Gothic Knights ultimately fell to the Red Hawks in both contests.

Game 1
NJCU (0-12, 0-12 NJAC) started off this one with a bang against Montclair (9-5, 8-4 NJAC) as Almonte blasted the first dinger of her collegiate career with one out in the top of the first. However, the Red Hawks got to freshman pitcher Sidnie Dabbadie (Burbank, Calif./John Burroughs) over her 4.0 innings. She allowed five earned (nine total) in the start. Tunney was 2-for-3 in this one, reaching on an infield single in the top of the third. She also singled down the line in right in the top of the fifth with the bases loaded and two outs, however the Red Hawks nailed the runner at home to end the game.

Game 2
Tunney got the start in the circle in this one, her first since starting the Gothic Knights' initial five games of the year. She threw the first 2.1 innings, allowing seven earned before being relieved by fellow rookie Sam Miller (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) for the final 2.0. Miller gave up just one earned on two hits. With the bat, Tunney was a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate.

What's Next
NJCU returns to play on Saturday, April 24, at 1:00 p.m. for another NJAC doubleheader, this time in Ewing, N.J., against #18 The College of New Jersey.
