PITMAN, N.J. — The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) announced its 2020-21 All-Conference men's and women's soccer teams yesterday, Wednesday, April 21, and today, Thursday, April 22. The New Jersey City University women's soccer squad, which made the NJAC Tournament for the first time since 2011, had three student-athletes selected to the All-NJAC team, led by freshman
Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret), who was a First Team selection. The men's soccer squad, which made its first appearance in the tournament since 2008, had one Second Team selection in senior
Nelson Segovia (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen).
Brites was one of just five Gothic Knights players to play and start in all five games this season, and one of just two freshmen. The rookie forward led NJCU in goals (2), points (4), shots on goal (4) and total shots (7), and was the only player on the squad to attempt — and convert — on a penalty in regulation or overtime. Additionally, she tied for the team lead in minutes played with 470 — meaning she did not come off the field — which equates to 94 minutes/game (the Gothic Knights played one overtime game, 120 minutes versus
Kean University in their 0-0 double overtime first round NJAC matchup, which the Cougars advanced on PKs 4-3).
Sophomore
Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial) garnered Honorable Mention All-NJAC honors. A team co-captain, Diouf made the shift to the back line this season after playing as a forward her rookie year, and held down the center back position all season long. The defensive anchor played a total of 464 minutes for the Gothic Knights, missing just six minutes all season, and played a key role in limiting opposing teams to 1.6 goals per game and a 11.6 shot percentage. She was one of five players to play and start in all games this season.
Joining Diouf as a Honorable Mention selection was junior co-captain
Victoria Gil (South River, N.J./South River). The first-year Gothic Knight transferred in from Middlesex County College this year and immediately took on a leadership roll with NJCU. The midfielder tied with Brites as the only other player never to come off the field over 470 minutes of action. She also collected a stellar assist in the
2-1 loss at William Paterson University in the regular-season finale. She, like her other two All-Conference selections, played and started in all five games this year.
On the men's side, Segovia — the team's sole captain — was one of just six players to play and start in all five games this season. He saw 391 minutes on the field and led a back line that allowed two goals or less in three of the Gothic Knights' matches this year. As the team leader, Segovia is expected to return next season for his final year of eligibility and once again captain a youthful squad that, this year, featured 19 freshmen.
