JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's soccer team returned home to Robert L. McNulty Memorial Field to play St. Joseph's College – Long Island on Sunday, Sept. 12.
The Gothic Knights (0-2-2) and visiting Golden Eagles (2-1) battled through a close first half, ending with no goals on the scoreboard. In the last 10 minutes of the game, the Golden Eagles proceeded to put two shots in the net – Jersey City followed with a single goal, but couldn't tie the game, leaving St. Joseph's victorious at 2-1.
Within the first five minutes, NJCU senior Genesis Torres (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) received a yellow card. The Golden Eagles had four shots on goal, all saved by Gothic Knight sophomore goalkeeper Angie Paz (Vernon, N.J./Vernon Township). Throughout the first half, rookies Rachel Amaro (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) and Josely Martinez (Paterson, N.J./Passaic County Tech) both had shots on goal, along with sophomores Kim Brites (Carteret, N.J./Carteret) and Shea Ramirez (Bogota, N.J./Immaculate Conception).
Jersey City sophomore goalkeeper Marissa Lotierzo (Maple Shade, N.J./Maple Shade) substituted in for Paz at the start of the second half. The following 30 minutes consisted of fouls and corner kicks that the Knights' couldn't finish off. Sophomore Krysti Alejandro (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and Ramirez took shots on goal but were both saved by the Golden Eagles' keeper.
At the 80th minute, Abbey Curcio scored the first goal of the match. With a quick turnaround, Curcio scored the second goal for the Golden Eagles after a NJCU foul. The visiting team led 2-0 with five minutes left on the clock.
The Gothic Knights' Martinez followed with a shot that rebounded off the crossbar. With three minutes left, Martinez and Alejandro set up the perfect play for junior Arame Diouf (Weehawken, N.J./Memorial), who made a break and scored into the lower corner of the net. Time ran out before Jersey City could tie the game.
