JERSEY CITY, N.J. – Eight, count them, eight goals were scored on Wednesday evening, Sept. 22, in the New Jersey City University men's soccer team's match with the City College of New York, and all of them came from the Gothic Knights. NJCU defeated the Beavers by a final of 8-0 in a non-conference meeting at Caven Point Field under the lights.
A total of nine NJCU (7-0-1) players got in on the action, tallying at least one point on the night against CCNY (0-1). The Gothic Knights had three two-goal scorers in the game in junior
Ryan Evande (Hackensack, N.J./Hackensack), sophomore
Maximo Vargas (Montevideo, Uruguay/The British Schools) and freshman
Jaime Bimboza (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson).
Vargas started things off in the 19th minute when sophomore
Thiago Duarte (Newark, N.J./Newark East Side) launched a perfectly aimed free kick attempt from 50 yards out. Vargas was able to get his head on it and send up to the top right corner and make it 1-0. Later in the half, NJCU took a 2-0 lead in the 41st minute thanks to another nifty free kick, this time from rookie
Jeremy Jordan (Guayaquil, Ecuador/ANAVI), as his attempt actually went in off the head of a Beaver defender for the own goal.
Up 2-0, NJCU plowed through CCNY for six more tallies in the final 45 minutes. Bimboza got it started with back-to-back scores in a matter of five minutes. In the 51st, the Beavers' netminder made the initial save on a long shot attempt, but the ball was mishandled and Bimboza jumped all over the miscue for the score. Moments later in the 56th, the CCNY keeper made two great stops but was unable to corral the rebound and Bimboza put it in the back of the net to make it 4-0.
Just over two minutes later in the 59th, Vargas notched his second goal of the game and seventh of the year after sophomore
Gabe Cruz (Colonia, N.J./Colonia) set him up to do some nifty ball-handling en route to a beautiful strike past the keeper. Later in the 66th, sophomore
Jorkaef Fallas (North Bergen, N.J./Hudson Catholic) was another beneficiary of the CCNY keeper's miscues as the netminder went to clear the ball from way out of his net, but sent it right onto the foot of Fallas, who took the long shot for the easy score.
Evande capped off the night to two goals – giving him three on the year – to seal it. His first came in the 77th when rookie Joey Velsaquez sent a quick pass through the defense and Evande turned and ripped it past the keeper. Then in the 89th, senior
Samuel Ansah (East Orange, N.J./Newark Tech) notched the assist after sending a cross in front for Evande to finish.
Highlights:
- The Gothic Knights finished with 24 total shots (14 on goal), while the Beavers had just five (three).
- Senior
Aldahir Cazun (Jersey City, N.J./William L. Dickinson) made his first start of the season and stopped both shots he faced in just under 70 minutes in net.
What's Next:
