WAYNE, N.J. — The New Jersey City University women's soccer team, led by a trio of freshmen, picked up the 1-0 victory on the road tonight, Wednesday, Oct. 12, over New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) foe William Paterson University. It's the Gothic Knights first NJAC win since 2017, and their first victory over the Pioneers since 2011.
Jersey City (4-6-3, 1-4 NJAC) rookie keeper
Sophia Mannino (Burlington, N.J./Burlington Township), playing in just her second game back after a month off, made five saves for the first shutout and first conference win of her career. The game's lone goal against the Pioneers (1-9-4, 0-5 NJAC) came midway through the first half in the 25th as rookie forwards
Ariana Flores-Ortiz (Little Falls, N.J./Passaic Valley Regional) and
Nyrohah Alvarenga (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) combined for the tally.
Following a long break due to an injury timeout, both teams regrouped in front of the William Paterson net for a corner kick. Coming in from the left, Alvarenga sent an outstanding cross to the front of the net and Flores-Ortiz made sure there was no doubt about it by putting away the header for what was ultimately the game-winning goal.
Alvarenga leads the Gothic Knights in assists (5) and points (17) and is tied for fourth in the NJAC in assists, as well. Flores-Ortiz is now fifth on Jersey City in both goals (3) and points (8). Mannino's five-save shutout brings her goal-against average down to 1.46 and her save percentage up to .714.
