CHARLESTON, S.C. — The New Jersey City University men's and women's tennis teams have been patrolling the lowcountry of South Carolina for the past week as the Gothic Knights have enjoyed a nice trip to being their outdoor seasons. On Saturday, March 12, both NJCU squads faced off with Division I foe the College of Charleston on a day when the wind was whipping at up to 30 miles per hour to close out their Spring Break trips.
The Green and Gold men (1-3) fell to the Cougars (3-6) by a score of 6-1, with doubles counting as one overall point. The highlights in this one were sophomore
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) at first singles, as the second-year Gothic Knight picked up NJCU's lone victory of the day when he defeated Zak Larke of CofC in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3. Freshman
Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) also had an exciting match at sixth singles as the rookie pushed his Cougar opponent Ben Husum to the bring in the three-set loss. De Lange captured the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second set, 6-1. The two then played the third set in a first-to-10 games, win-by-two, format and Husum won 10-2.
On the women's side, due to some weather cancelations, the Gothic Knights and Cougars squared off for the second time in four days and Charleston once again topped NJCU 7-0. Junior
Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) captured a couple of games in the first set at third singles, while three other players — freshmen Mila Gilgorov and
Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) and graduate student
Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) — all won one game during their straight-set losses.

The Gothic Knight men return to action on Tuesday afternoon, March 15, for a scheduled-3:00 p.m. road match at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Billie Jean King National Tennis Center against Baruch College. The women will take on another Division I opponent in their next match, a scheduled-5:00 p.m. first-serve on Friday evening, March 18, in Baltimore, Md. against Loyola University Maryland.
