READING, Pa. — The New Jersey City University baseball team had its two-game winning streak snapped today, Sunday, March 20, following this afternoon's 16-5 defeat against the Golden Wolves of Alverina University. NJCU battled in the early innings, taking a 2-1 lead in the third, but the Alvernia offense was too much, notching a season-high 23 hits against the Gothic Knights.
Jersey City (5-6) began the game quiet, but senior right-hander
Paul Tannucilli (Old Bridge, N.J./Old Bridge) settled down the aggressive Red and Gold (6-9-1) offense by allowing one run over the first two innings, giving the hot NJCU bats the chance to make a rally. Senior center fielder
Ricky Voss (Eatontown, N.J./Monmouth Regional) picked up right where he left off yesterday by hitting a gapper to right-center, bringing in fellow outfielder junior
Josh Hernandez (Lake Worth, Fla./Park Vista Community) and freshman catcher
Nick Vaughn (Ocean Township, N.J./Ocean Township). Junior third baseman
Jimmy Vizzoni (Hamilton, N.J./Trenton Catholic) reignited the rally with a single to left, but the Golden Wolves limited the damage, leaving the top of the second trailing 2-1.
After Alvernia scratched in three runs in the inning, the Green and Gold responded in the fourth, bringing home one run. Sophomore infielder
Ali Pompey (Belle Meade, N.J./Trenton Catholic) got the inning going with two outs, knocking a ball through the right-side. Jersey City capitalized on an error by the AU defense with junior infielder
Jon Taylor (Englewood, N.J./Dwight Morrow) roping a ball down the left field line to bring home Pompey. This cut the deficit to one run with five innings left.
The Golden Wolves took over the hot hitting for the afternoon and totaled 10 runs over the next three innings.
Trailing by 11, the NJCU offense did not let up, as Vizzoni brought in another two runs for Jersey City. A rocket down the left-field line moved his average to .410, trailing only Voss and freshman slugger
Matt Kaliske (Forked River, N.J./Lacey Township). Alvernia tacked on two more in the final innings, ultimately defeating the Gothic Knights 15-4.
Notables:
- Voss continued his five-game hit streak, giving him 13 hits over that span and with an eye-opening .650 batting average.
- Vizzoni has been on a run of his own with six-game hit streak and has now recorded a hit in 10 of his first 11 to start the season.
