Women's Tennis Improves to 2-0 in Division III Play with 9-0 Sweep at Yeshiva

Gothic Knights Surrender Just Six Games Over Nine Matches on the Day

BRONX — The New Jersey City University women's tennis team picked up its second victory of the season on Sunday afternoon, March 27, and remains perfect in Division III play to this point in the 2021-22 campaign. The Gothic Knights toppled Yeshiva University on the road, 9-0, and dropped a total of just six games over the nine matches play.

NJCU (2-4) started things off with a quick sweep at doubles, surrendering just two games. The sibling duo of junior Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) and freshman Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) got things straight with an 8-0 sweep at first doubles, followed by the red-hot pair of graduate student captain Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) and junior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College) at second doubles, also with the 8-0 victory. Freshman Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/Collegio San Carlo) and sophomore Lockslea Mayers (Westminster, Md./Westminster) closed out doubles with an 8-2 win at #3, giving Jersey City the 3-0 lead over the Maccabees (1-9) heading into singles play.

There, Clamor got things started at second singles with a straight-set scoreless sweep to make it 4-0 before the younger Zorzan sister, Sara, clinched the match victory with a 6-0, 6-0, win of her own at fourth singles. Adding on to the victory, her older sister, Giada, swept first singles without giving up a game, as well. Mayers, playing at sixth singles, swept her foe in scoreless sets, followed by a 6-0, 6-0, win for Waugh at #5. Gligorov closed out the day with a 6-2, 6-2, win at third singles.

Up Next:
Back in the win column, the Gothic Knights return to the court after a week's break next Sunday, April 3, for an 11:00 a.m. match in Camden, N.J., to open up New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) competition for the season. NJCU faces off with Rutgers-Camden for the first time since last season's NJAC Tournament Quarterfinal loss against the Scarlet Raptors on May 1, 2021. The Green and Gold, now sporting a more experienced roster, will look to get the better of Rutgers in the rematch.
