Men’s Volleyball Shuts Down St. Joe's-Brooklyn, Moves to Second in Skyline Standings

BROOKLYN — The New Jersey City University men's volleyball team traveled to St. Joseph's College-Brooklyn on Tuesday night, March 29, where the Gothic Knights swept in three sets once again (25-9, 25-5, 25-9). Jersey City faced the Bears over the weekend at the NJCU Tri-Match, where the Green and Gold dominated on its home courts at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center (JMAC). Nearing the end of Skyline Conference play, the Gothic Knights currently sit in a tie for second in the standings, along with Ramapo College.

Jersey City (18-8- 8-3 Skyline) never let off the gas in tonight's contest against the Bears (1-17, 0-14 Skyline). As the Green and Gold held momentum, the hosts struggled to break double digits in the first set. In the second set, NJCU led by 18 before St. Joe's could put a point of its own on the board. The third set followed the previous two – Brooklyn managed to notch some kills and a service ace, but it was not enough to stop the Gothic reign.

Junior tri-captain middle blocker and reigning New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) Defensive Player of the Week Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), along with reigning NJAC and Skyline Rookie of the Week freshman outside hitter Anthony Trivers (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) led the Gothic Knights with seven kills each – DaSilva also recorded two blocks in tonight's contest. Junior oppositte Chris Castillo (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) closely followed with six kills. Senior setter Leo Ferrari (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) notched a season-high five aces, as well as Trivers with three and senior setter Aaron Mantilla (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) with two. Trivers and junior Nico Figueroa (Jersey City, N.J./County Prep) tallied five digs each, along with Mantilla with three. Mantilla led with 25 assists, followed by Ferrari with eight and senior Daniel Esteva (Union, N.J./Union) with two. Senior outside hitter Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and junior tri-captain oppositte James Bajor (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) each found a single ace, in addition to a couple of points added throughout the first set.
