JERSEY CITY, N.J. — The New Jersey City University men's tennis team improved to 3-0 in Division III play today, Thursday, March 31. The Gothic Knights took down New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) West Division foe SUNY Oneonta, 9-0, at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts in what goes in the books as an official non-conference, cross division match. NJCU did not drop a set in the nine-match sweep.
The Green and Gold (3-4) kicked it off against the visiting Red Dragons (2-4) in doubles play, winning all three. At third doubles, rookie
Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) and sophomore
Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) teamed up for the quick 8-1 win, followed by sophomores
Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) and
Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) at #1 doubles, 8-3. Senior
Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and junior
Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) closed out at #2 doubles with the 8-2 win.
Moving on to singles play, Weiss got things started with a scoreless sweep at #4, 6-0, 6-0. He was followed by de Lange at #5 singles and he sealed the official victory, 6-1, 6-0. Ley stepped in next to finish at #3 singles, going 6-1, 6-1. Teynie then closed out #1 singles in straight scoreless sets, as well. Loras picked up his second singles victory of the season as he took home #6 with a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The last match to finish on the day was Bourghelle at #2, who claimed his win in straight sets, as well, 6-3, 6-1.
