JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University men's team opened New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) play against Ramapo College on Tuesday, April 12, at the Lincoln Park Tennis Courts. The team improves to 4-0 in Division III play after treading through the Roadrunners to take a 9-0 finish. Before the start of doubles, the team received the long-awaited NJAC East Division Championship rings from their 2021 title victory. Coming back from a 22-year hiatus, the Gothic Knights took down then-reigning champion The College of New Jersey twice during the season to earn the title.

Jersey City (4-4, 1-0 NJAC) gained momentum quickly after taking all three doubles matches against the Roadrunners (1-4, 0-2 NJAC). The sophomore duo of Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) left no games behind in their win of 8-0 at the second doubles spot. Senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) claimed the second doubles point after defeating their opponents 8-1 at the first doubles. Senior co-captain Alex Platonov (Weehawken, N.J./Weehawken) and sophomore Gerard Loras (Tortosa, Spain/Col·legi Diocesà Sagrada Família) closed out at third doubles with the 8-4 win.

Moving to singles play, Ley walked off the court first with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #3. Junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) followed at #4 with a 6-0, 6-1 victory and then freshman Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) took #5 with a 6-1, 6-1 win. Bourghelle cleaned up his match 6-4, 6-2 at #1, followed by Platonov with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #6. To close out the day, Teynie battled to win 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 barn-burner in a third-set tiebreak.

Up Next:
The Gothic Knights will travel to Farmingdale State College for a non-conference matchup on Long Island on Friday, Aprril 15, at 4:30 p.m. NJCU remains on the road until Aprril 24 when the Green and Gold return home to take on heated NJAC rival TCNJ at Lincoln Park.
