Women’s Tennis, NJAC Preseason “Dark Horse,” Tops Second-Ranked Stockton 6-3 on the Road

GALLOWAY, N.J. – The New Jersey City University women's tennis team rolled through the highly anticipated matchup against the preseason #2-ranked Stockton University on Saturday, April 16. The New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) preseason poll projected the Gothic Knights in the #3 spot, but today Jersey City proved otherwise with a 6-3 victory.

The NJCU (5-5, 3-1 NJAC) sister duo walked off the court with the first victory of the day at first doubles. Junior Giada Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo dello Sport Marco Pantani) and freshman Sara Zorzan (Milan, Italy/Liceo Falcone Borsellino) took down the Ospreys (10-3, 3-2 NJAC) with a quick 8-1 defeat. The rookie pair Mila Gligorov (Milan, Italy/Collegio San Carlo) and Vanshita Malhotra (Barwala, India/DAV Model School) managed to win games, but could not pull off the win at second doubles, dropping 8-2. The final doubles point came down to the pair of graduate student and team captain Brittany Waugh (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) and junior Eliza Clamor (Auckland, New Zealand/Rangitoto College). The duo pulled away with an early 3-0 lead, but the Ospreys did not back down. The pairing battled through some tough games, however, and pulled out the win 8-6 for NJCU.

Leading 2-1 going into singles, Giada Z. took the first win at #1 after her opponent retired in the second set. Clamor, still fired up from doubles, walked off the court next after shutting down her opponent 6-0, 6-0 at #2. Waugh followed with a 6-3, 6-1 victory at #6 that clinched the overall match win, while Gligorov pulled some games, but ultimately dropped 6-0, 6-4 at #4. Sara Z. clinched the final win of the day, defeating her opponent 6-2, 6-2 at #5. All eyes were on Malhotra as she battled through a close third-set tiebreak, just falling short 10-7.

Up Next:
Jersey City will stay on the road for a dual matchup with Rutgers-Camden. Both the NJCU women's and men's teams will compete in Camden, N.J., for their next NJAC competition against the Scarlet Raptors on Monday, April 18 at 3:30 p.m.
