BRONXVILLE, N.Y. — Finishing off regular-season Skyline Conference play, the New Jersey City University men's volleyball team dominated the tri-match hosted by Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday, April 2. Today's wins marked some exciting milestones for the Gothic Knights. Jersey City officially clinched the second seed in the Skyline Tournament and is now set to host the semifinal matchup on Thursday, April 7, at the John J. Moore Athletics & Fitness Center (JMAC) against Ramapo College. Another notable is that NJCU officially clinched its first 20-win season since 2009 following the first victory of the day against the College of Mount Saint Vincent. Head coach
Carlo Edra was on his second season coaching the Gothic Knights when they set the bar of 22 wins in 2009. Lastly, the win over CMSV also marked the 100th victory of Edra's coaching career.
Match #1: NJCU 3, Mount Saint Vincent 0 (25-12, 25-10, 25-13)
NJCU (21-8, 11-3 Skyline) jump-started the day with a quick three-set win against the Dolphins (5-12, 5-8 Skyline). The Green and Gold started off hot, pulling away with a lead off 15-5 in the first set. Kills from freshman outside hitter
Anthony Trivers (Washington Township, N.J./Washington Township) and junior opposite
Chris Castillo (North Bergen, N.J./High Tech) helped finished the deal. The second set mirrored the first, as the Gothic Knights ran with the momentum to finish 25-10. After exchanging a few points in the third set, NJCU pushed past the Dolphins for the final set win.
The senior duo of outside hitter
Jonathan Andrews (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen) and setter
Aaron Mantilla (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) led the match with nine kills and 25 assists, respectively. Junior tri-captains
James Bajor (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) and
Brandon DaSilva (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) each tallied six kills in the match. Andrews also notched a game-high five aces, trailed by Mantilla with four and Trivers with two.
Highlights vs. CMSV:
- Mantilla ended with a match-high 25 assists, adding to his 331 total this season.
- Figueroa recorded nine digs, just one off from his career-high 10 from the previous match against CMSV on March 22.
- DaSilva had a game-high three blocks; Bajor and Castillo each had one.
- Jersey City took care of business ending with a .500 hitting percentage, as opposed to the Dolphins' -.085.
Match #2: NJCU 3, Sarah Lawrence 0 (25-13, 25-12, 25-21)
The Green and Gold continued to roll through today's second contest against the hosts, Sarah Lawrence (8-14, 6-7 Skyline). Kills from DaSilva, rookie middle blocker
Nate Aguilar (Kearny, N.J./Kearny), outside hitter
Mahmoud Serour (Kearny, N.J./Kearny) and setter Leo Ferarri put Jersey City ahead in the first set. Bajor and Andrews added to the fun, securing the set 25-13. The Gothic Knights continued to hold control over the second and third sets. Ferrari came in with the Wii "super serve," hitting the Gryphons with three back-to-back aces to put NJCU up 5-0 in the final set. The Gothic squad followed through, shutting it down with a final kill from sophomore opposite
Kenneth Gil (North Bergen, N.J./North Bergen).
Andrews led with a match-high 15 kills, followed by Serour with seven and DaSilva with six. Putting up the numbers, Ferrari rolled out nine service aces in today's contest – setting a career-high. He also dished out 30 assists, adding to his 571 total for the season.

- Ferrari served up a career-high nine aces; Bajor and Serour each had two.
- Andrews led the way for Jersey City with 10 digs, followed by Bajor with eight and senior libero
