Men’s Tennis Dominates Clark University; Claims First of Two Matches on Road Trip to Massachusetts

WORCESTER, MA. – The New Jersey City University men's team hit the road to Worcester, Mass., for a matchup with Clark University on Thursday, April 21. The Gothic Knights came in hot, sweeping the Cougars 9-0 for the first of two matches on the trip.

This is NJCU's (6-4) first ever matchup with Clark (3-10) since the program restart last fall. The Gothic Knights jumped right into it as the sophomore duo of Alejandro Ley (Las Palmas, Spain/I.E.S. Politécnico) and Jordi Julia (Barcelona, Spain/IES Sant Quirze del Valles) walked off the court with an 8-0 win at #3 doubles. Senior co-captain Theo Bourghelle (Lesquin, France/LaSalle Lille) and sophomore Nico Teynie (Rouen, France/Lycée Val de Seine) claimed the second doubles point after defeating their opponents 8-3 at the #1 spot. For the final doubles point, junior Ryan Weiss (Mullica Hill, N.J./Clearview Regional) and rookie Olaf de Lange (Maasland, Netherlands/Stedelijk Gymnasium Schiedam) battled for a 8-5 win at the #2 spot.

Weiss moved quickly to pick up a 6-0, 6-1 win at the #5 singles spot. De Lange followed with a scoreless sweep at #6, then Ley with a 6-1, 6-1 win at #4. Teynie shut down his opponent at the #1 spot, leaving no games behind. Bourghelle was next to walk off the court with a 6-1, 6-2 win, while Julia closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-2 victory at #3.
